The Maintenance Helper will serve in Engineering, General Support Shop at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Columbia, SC.

Duties

Duties include but may not be limited to the following: Carpentry: Assists journeyman in the full range of carpentry work involving in the maintenance and repair of the facility. Works includes alterations, modifications, and minor construction of items and structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness such as: framework, staircases, doors and windows, installing finished paneling and interior and exterior trim. Interprets drawings, blueprints, and specifications. Plans and lays out work in accordance with drawings, sketches, blueprints, and own knowledge of construction or needed repairs. Selects lumber, materials, and supplies. Plumbing: Performs a variety of plumber helper tasks: Working with higher graded personnel, performs tasks incidental to the trade such as assisting in the removal, assembly, laying or hanging of pipe by lifting, carrying, and handling fittings to the plumber. Follows detailed instructions, independently accomplished routine tasks such as clearing a simple stoppage. Replaces washers in faucets, cutting or drilling previously marked holes and openings in walls or floors. Carries pipe fittings, tools and materials to and from worksite; measuring, cutting, threading, and bending marked pipe lengths; and making repairs to piping, fittings, and plumbing fixtures. Painting: Assists with the surface preparation and refinishing of all interior and exterior surfaces of buildings, structures, equipment, and furnishings where appearance as well as surface protection is important. Removes old finishes by power washing, dissolving, burning, scraping, sanding, wire brushing, and otherwise prepares surfaces for repainting. Prepares coating materials, paints, polyurethanes, stains by mixing and applying pre-coating agents and solvents. Equipment Inventory and Operations: Assists journeyman in assigning and reviewing inventory numbers on container labels for incoming equipment, ensuring that the information provided matches incoming equipment identifiers on the delivery reports. Maintains and ensures equipment storage areas are clean, orderly and organized in such a manner that an accurate operating inventory can be accomplished easily and without advanced notification. Receives, stores, signs out and checks tools, equipment, shop supplies and repair parts used by installation and maintenance shop workers and mechanics. Installations: Assists the journeyman in the installation of drapery hardware and hangs drapes to assure proper functioning and coverage; installs and removes various types of dispensers (i.e., soap, towel, glove boxes, sharps containers, etc.), receptacles and other wall hung equipment and furnishings. Moves furniture as part of installation or set-up activities and performs the various tasks of a maintenance worker. Laborer: Assists with grounds maintenance duties. Performs digging work related to such tasks as planting of trees and shrubs, laying of plumbing systems and building sidewalks. Breaks up hard surfaces utilizing a jackhammer or necessary tools. Mows yards using power mowers; and cuts trees using chainsaws and axes. PHYSICAL EFFORT: The Maintenance Helper will often be required to make repairs requiring significant physical effort to lift, pull, and push. Work involves heavy physical exertion, frequent lifting, running power mowers on grades, or moving heavy wheelbarrow loads of cement. They will be subjected to working from ladders, climbing, crawling, bending, standing, crouching, and stooping for extended periods. In addition, the Maintenance Helper must use, move, and control heavy equipment, carry, and set up ladders and scaffolding, and work from ladders and scaffold. Frequently, the incumbent will lift objects weighing over forty (40lbs) pounds and occasionally, with assistance, lift objects over fifty (50lbs) pounds. AND WORK CONDITIONS: The Maintenance Helper work is performed inside or outside under various conditions of weather, temperature, and humidity. The Maintenance Helper may occasionally be exposed to extreme heat or cold. Sometimes works in noisy, damp, or dirty areas. Frequently works from ladders, staging, or elevated platforms or in buildings, structures, ships, submarines, or craft undergoing alteration or repair. The Maintenance Helper is subject to possible cuts, abrasions, and burns and may occasionally be exposed to the possibility of bruises or broken bones. An employee must follow occupational and safety procedures to eliminate or minimize these conditions and may be required to wear respiratory devices or protective clothing and equipment which may be restrictive and uncomfortable. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
