The incumbent of this position is a Maintenance Mechanic Leader in the General Support Shop section of the Engineering Service at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Columbia, SC.
Duties
The incumbent of this position is a working maintenance mechanic leader with the General Support Shop. The work involves a full range of tasks associated with installation, maintenance, renovation, and repair of all structures, walls, ceilings, doors, floors, masonry and furniture. This includes the maintenance and repair of interior and exterior building operations, repair and maintenance work.
The incumbent assumes the duties and responsibilities of the General Support Shop Foreman in his/her absence.
The incumbent, as a leader, obtains needed information on decisions from the supervisor and relays the decisions to the affected personnel on problems or questions to facilitate the effective accomplishment of work assignments.
The incumbent communicates with other shops to see that needed materials and tools are available and those necessary tasks requiring coordination are being completed in accordance with his supervisor's instructions.
The incumbent reviews drawings and specifications for new construction projects and makes recommended changes as the building subject matter expert.
The incumbent performs inspections on new construction and renovation projects as needed.
Incumbent will have a thorough working knowledge of, and ability to communicate to others, the safe working requirements for construction and maintenance.
Knowledgeable of national and state codes applicable to this medical center.
Incumbent will use appropriate tools and protective equipment for each task as required by policy and applicable national codes.
May be exposed to high temperature, steam pipes, close ventilation while working in areas such as manholes, crawlspaces and attics, including exposure to high voltages in the normal course of duties, as well as electric shock hazard.
Attend appropriate acquisition training and signing VA Form 0242, Government wide Purchase Card certification, to become the contracting officer of record for any purchase made with the card.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, extension ladders and lifts in tunnels that require lifting, pushing, pulling or carrying objects of varying weights, sizes and shapes sometimes in excess of 50 pounds. He/She is subjected to strain due to lack movement such as standing in place, crouching or stooping for extended periods of time.
Working Conditions: The incumbent is subjected to such hazardous conditions as working with power tools, fast moving cutting tools, welding electric and acetylene, exposure to noxious gases and fumes. Infrared and ultraviolet radiation heat, flying sparks electrical shock, burns, falls from working on slippery or unstable surfaces. The work is done indoors and outdoors. Sometimes in wet, cold weather, in areas that will vary from clean rooms to areas that are noisy, dirty, poor ventilation where exposed to dust, grease, soiling of clothing and skin. There is a discomfort when wearing protective clothing, gloves, goggles, or welding helmets.
