You will serve as an Engineering Technician (NUCLEAR) in the Nuclear Facilities and Waste Engineering Division, Nuclear Engineering and Planning Department, Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine.
Duties
You will serve as the technical expert and central point of engineering authority for the assigned area of responsibility.
You will provide assessment of current nuclear facilities, design of new or modified facilities and testing and evaluation of newly established processes within the assigned area of responsibility.
You will prepare and review detailed work instructions ensuring all appropriate engineering, radiological, and safety requirements are met.
You will troubleshoot engineering problems, identify and correct deficiencies, and plan and implement long-range improvement projects.
You will provide coverage and oversight of the handling, processing, and disposal of liquid and solid radioactive waste.

- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This is a bargaining unit position.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- Occasional overtime may be required.
Qualifications
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In order to qualify for this position, your resume must demonstrate at least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled and has equipped you with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities, to perform successfully the duties of the position. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
FOR GS-12 (one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-11):
Experience with nuclear-powered submarine reactor plant system operations: propulsion plant operations, overhaul, repair, and familiarity with Shipyard processes and requirements for controlling and managing these evolutions.
Experience with other fields of engineering and the various technologies applied to nuclear reactor plant work on ships at naval shipyards.
Experience with engineering principles required to draft and write technical work instructions.
Experience with the handling, processing, and disposal of liquid and solid radioactive waste.
Experience interpreting the Shipyard's Nuclear Power Manuals, Naval Nuclear Technical Manuals, Radiological Controls Manual, etc.
FOR GS-11 (one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-09):
Experience with the design, installation, testing and operation of nuclear reactors, nuclear power plants, and other nuclear systems.
Experience with the handling, processing, and disposal of liquid and solid radioactive waste.
Experience assisting with writing technical work instructions in a clear and concise manner.
Experience interpreting the Shipyard's Nuclear Power Manuals, Naval Nuclear Technical Manuals, Radiological Controls Manual, etc.
