Our medical center provides primary care and specialty health services, including addiction and substance abuse treatment, cardiology, mental health care, neurology, suicide prevention, women's health services, and more. Then Pharmacy Technician position functions primarily in patient care areas and Pharmacy Service within the health care organization.
Duties
Under the supervision of a pharmacist, pharmacy technicians perform routine pharmacy functions including filling, preparation and dispensing of prescriptions, sterile compounding preparation, management of automated dispensing equipment (ADE), inventory management and multiple types of customer contact services.
Duties may include but are not limited to:
Reads and interprets prescriptions, obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage form; determines proper amount and counts, pours, or measures the medications; affixes proper label; and records required data on Pharmacy's copy of prescription/order.
Prepares all IV admixtures, including cytotoxic agents, investigational drugs, and other hazardous medications, in accordance with established policy and procedures.
Maintains pre-determined levels of automatic replenishment/ward stock medications for patient care areas.
Assists with inventory management by ensuring that adequate, in date stocks of medications and supplies for dispensing are maintained in the pharmacy.
Receives new stock of controlled substances in accordance with VHA regulations. Records all transactions in the VistA Controlled Substances Software package. Ensures the receipt is witnessed by an accountable officer, or designee.
Operates and performs preventive maintenance on complicated pharmacy equipment.
Coordinates the completion of all monthly ward inspections. Performs ward inspections as assigned monthly. Removes/replaces outdated items and excessive quantities of medications and documents findings using appropriate forms in accordance with established policy and procedures.
Assists Pharmacy supervisor with training of new pharmacy technicians in both inpatient and outpatient areas.
Maintains a training/education manual for the focus area assigned. Provides training to new or existing staff so that these competencies are maintained
Work Schedule: Full-time; Monday - Friday, rotating off-tour based on departmental needs

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
Citizenship. Be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7407(a).
Education or Experience. None Required
Certification. For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either:
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT). ~OR~
National Healthcareer Association (NHA), Certified Pharmacy Technician (ExCPT).
This vacancy is being filled at the full performance level of GS-06, certification is not required, but preferred.
English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
Grade Determination: In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must meet the below Grade Determinations to be eligible for this GS-06 Pharmacy Technician position.
Education or Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower level of GS-05. Such experience will need to be clearly documented within your application to demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's):
GS-05 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs):
Basic pharmacy operations.
Perform duties in pharmacy functional areas that demonstrates a knowledge of pharmaceuticals.
Experience that demonstrates a knowledge of pharmaceutical nomenclature (including generic, chemical and proprietary names of drug).
Filling Prescriptions
Use of pharmacy information systems or basic pharmacy dispensing equipment with oversight.
GS-06 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Knowledge of Federal and state laws related to pharmacy practice.
Knowledge of preparation, storage and distribution of medication products including those requiring special handling and documentation.
Ability to use pharmacy information systems or operate pharmacy dispensing equipment.
Knowledge of basic inventory procedures.
Ability to communicate with patients and staff and direct questions to appropriate personnel.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-6.
Preferred Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower level.
Physical Requirements: Heavy lifting (45lbs and over); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (3 hours per day); standing (8 hours per day); kneeling (2 hours per day); repeated bending (4 hours per day); both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted).
