The Lead Pharmacy Technician will assist the pharmacy supervisors in all areas of pharmacy at Dwight D. Eisenhower VAMC. The lead Outpatient care in community technician will meet all requirements of full performance pharmacy technicians. The lead technician will assist the pharmacy supervisors to coordinate, develop, and oversee the efforts of the assigned technicians in all pharmacy activities. It will be necessary to possess the ability to solve problems and make recommendations.

Major Duties & Responsibilities: 1) Assist customers with incoming care in the community prescriptions. 2) Assist care in the community pharmacist as needed. 3) Ensure accurate transcription of care in the community prescriptions. 4) Ensure accurate filing and maintenance of care in the community prescriptions. 5) Ability to operate, maintain, and troubleshoot problems with automated equipment. 6) Understanding the importance of maximizing production and efficiency. 7) Monitor pharmacists and pharmacy technicians for compliance with controlled substance policies. 8) Replenishes and maintains emergency crash carts. 9) Reviews inventory and ward stock medications for expired medications. Completes these reviews on time in accordance with department policy. 10) As an experienced pharmacy technician, works alongside other technicians. coaching, mentoring, assisting and/or training them in the proper performance of their duties. 11) May cover inpatient areas as needed and will work closely with other Lead pharmacy Technicians. Administrative Program Management Functions 1) Responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the centralized pharmacy in accordance with established policies. 2) Responsibility for assigned workload analysis and reports to pharmacy service management. 3) Assists pharmacy supervisors with preparing and maintaining the holiday and off tour rotation schedule. 4) Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of pharmacy dispensing equipment including unit dose repackaging machines, point of care cabinets, outpatient dispensing units, and the domiciliary kiosk. 5) The lead technician will supervise the general operation of the equipment. 6) Coordinate and monitor cleaning schedules, software updates, maintenance schedules, and generate necessary reports. 7) Lead technician will review assignments and ensure that all ward inspections are completed in accordance with established policies and procedures. 8) Assists with daily huddles, huddle boards and shift change hand off communication. 9) Maintains current knowledge and answers questions of other employees on policies, procedures, directives, etc. 10) Serves as a liaison between professional staff (pharmacist) and nonprofessional staff to improve communications and to resolve work related problems. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: None required. English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy Technician candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determination for GS-08: Experience. Candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level and demonstrate the KSAs below. Certification. For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either: PTCB as a CPhT or NHA as a ExCPT. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity and range of variety and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Lead pharmacy technicians perform duties independently, which consist of significant scope and complexity and will assist with technician oversight. Lead pharmacy technicians lead three GS-07 or more pharmacy technicians/employees/staff members, provide direction for daily operations and assume responsibility for integrating and monitoring standard pharmacy policies to maintain continuous workflow and quality within the service. Lead pharmacy technicians must do a combination of at least three of the following duties: prepare work schedules and assign tasks to ensure timely completion of duties; ensure pharmacy resources are in optimal working condition and address workflow needs; provide guidance and support of the work unit in supervisory absence; train personnel (including students) in methods, procedures and use of equipment and instruments specific to the assigned area; provide input to supervisor on performance and training needs of employees; adjust work assignments due to absences, emergencies or changes in priorities; resolve simple informal complaints of employees and patients, refer more difficult problems to the supervisor; or recommend approval and/or disapproval of leave requests. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs for all GS-08 assignments and meet any additional KSAs for the assignment, if indicated: Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.) Note: See Specialized Area.in the Definitions Section. Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures. Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy. Physical Requirements: heavy lifting {45Ibs and over); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (3 hours per day); standing (8 hours per day); kneeling (2 hours per day); repeated bending (4 hours per day); both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted).
