These positions are located in varies locations within the Montana/Dakotas BLM. Information about each location and the surrounding area can be found by searching the chamber of commerce web site for each city.
We expect to fill one or more vacancies in each location at this time; however, if needed, other locations within the Montana/Dakotas State, District or Field offices may be considered based on need and management discretion.
Duties
Duties below are preformed with assistance at the GS-4 and 5 grade levels, with full performance of duties at the GS-6 and 7 grade levels.
Conducts range studies such as condition and trend, utilization, actual use, climatological and other pertinent studies, while training and monitoring crews carrying out the studies.
Plans and conducts range inventory surveys, selecting appropriate guidelines and techniques to use while reviewing collected data for technical accuracy.
Conducts range use supervision and allotment inspections, conferring with permittees/lessees on general inquiries such as project maintenance and condition.
Independently identifies needed range improvements on allotments, identifying and recommending improvement project types, locations, and methods.
Provides assistance in updating case file and allotment file information, preparing billing and other automated system input documents.
Requirements

GS-04: You must possess six months of general and six months of specialized experience. General experience is any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position or provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience must be at or equivalent to the GS-03 and equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: performing basic work in the conservation, regulation, and use of public or Federally controlled lands for grazing; assisting in conducting range research activities; working in the operation of a livestock ranch.

Education: You must have completed two years of study above high school that included 12semester hours in courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wild land fire science. No more than three semester hours in mathematics is creditable.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
GS-05: You must possess one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: performing work in the conservation, regulation, and use of public or Federally controlled lands for grazing; conducting range research activities; working in the operation of a livestock ranch.

Education: You must have completed four years of study towards a Bachelor's degree with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a field directly-related to this position; or that included at least 24semester hours in courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than six semester hours in mathematics is creditable.

GS-06: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to theGS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: collecting range field data for use in inventory monitoring; performing range administrative work associated with grazing leases, permits, or applications; assisting in the management or preservation of lands comparable to the public range.

Graduate-level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
GS-07: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: independently collecting range field data for use in inventory monitoring; reviewing range administrative work associated with grazing leases, permits, or applications; assisting in the management or preservation of lands comparable to the public range.

Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting.
Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The incumbent will carefully adhere to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
