Duties
As a Microbiologist, you will:
Perform microbiological science work or support work in various scientific and public health areas associated with numerous biological agents
Acquire and organize materials and information to carry out study procedures for assigned projects, upgrading current capabilities where appropriate
Perform experiments in accordance with approved methods and procedures.
Periodically evaluate progress of the experiment to determine whether data generated are accurate and valid
Identify methods and procedures to collect data, and conducts experiments and studies, making adjustments in methods and procedures
Carry out a variety of laboratory procedures and processes as it relates to microorganisms and their reactions to the environment.

Basic Qualifications:
Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.

Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-12 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level, which must include the following experience: preparing reports on scientific investigations and carrying out research projects related to pathogenic microorganisms and their interrelationships with other living forms and reactions to the environment.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
A copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
A college or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to
