The Woodcrafter is assigned to the General Support Shop, Engineering Service Line, Dorn Veterans Medical Center, Veterans Health Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Columbia, SC. This position receives direct supervision from the Supervisory Maintenance Mechanic, with second level supervision from the Supervisory Facility Operations Specialist.
Duties
Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Layout and Construction of Projects:
Performs interior and exterior building operations, repair and maintenance work.
Plans and completes projects involving the construction, alteration, repairing, and/or modifying of framework, rafters, doors and hardware, finished paneling, windows, rough furniture, interior/exterior trim, staircases, trusses and beams; spacing, accuracy and fit are essential to the structural soundness or appearances.
Measures, cuts, constructs, installs, repairs and modifies routine millwork, framing, benches, partitions, tables, furniture, etc.
Performs work to close tolerances, exact fit, and structural soundness.
Plans, measures and lays out carpentry materials using broad knowledge of wood materials and substitutes, with general and precision woodworking techniques.
Makes and repairs high-grade decorative woodwork for use in homes, offices and other public facilities.
Operates and uses carpentry tools by setting-up, adjusting, and maintaining tools to meet required specifications.

Repair Work:
Performs carpentry work requiring skills beyond the scope of standard trade
guidelines ( e.g., making and repairing high-grade wooden items such as fine cabinetry and furniture).
Retains a basic knowledge of the techniques and procedures involved in laying a variety of brick, block and stone in the construction of repair of partitions, plaster walls, walkways, and fireplaces.
Ensures that the proper proportions of sand, lime, cement, and water are used to obtain desired consistency.
Constructs walls, sidewalks, chimneys, fireplaces, manholes, and boilers.
Uses a variety of brick, block, stone, adobe, and related structures, incumbent lays complex, curved or circular structures; cuts, shapes and finishes stone; lays rubble and cut stone to obtain good strength and appearance.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 7:00am - 3:30pm

PHYSICAL EFFORTS: The Woodcrafter works in tiring positions for prolonged periods; frequent standing, bending and stooping, crouching and arm movement; frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to forty-five (45lbs) pounds, and may occasionally lift heavier items with assistance.AND
WORK CONDITIONS: The Woodcrafter usually works in a machine shop or other enclosed area, which may be unheated;frequently exposed to eye, skin, nose and lung irritations from glue, bonding chemicals, vapors, splinters, and sawdust; possibility of receiving cuts and serious injuries such as loss of fingersfrom accidents while operating woodworking machines. The Woodcrafter wears or uses safetyclothing and equipment and may work in inclement weather.
