Duties

Welcome to the Sensor Science Division (SSD) in NIST's Physical Measurement Laboratory! Our Mission is to foster the next generation of SI-traceable dimensional, thermodynamic, and optical radiation measurements and their application by providing calibrations, standards, and innovations that improve U.S. industrial competitiveness and quality-of-life. As a new Physicist on our team, you will: Develop new optical radiation measurement methods, design and build instruments to calibrate optical detectors and analyze the uncertainty of measurement results. Advance the state of the art in the optical power responsivity calibration of optical detectors using innovative cryogenic electrical substitution radiometers. Perform research and development on the measurement science and instrumentation for infrared spectrophotometry.

Qualifications

Individual Occupational Requirements Basic Requirements: Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics. OR Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must also have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 (ZP-II at NIST) level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience in designing and developing optical systems, working with lasers and cryogenics. OR Master's or equivalent graduate degree as defined in the basic requirements. OR A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as defined in the additional requirements. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
