The successful candidate will develop novel metrology tools to assess high temperature power electronics performance and reliability. This includes efforts to:
separate the performance and reliability contributions of the both the solid-state device as well as the associated packaging
develop physical models to describe and predict device and package operation and long-term degradation
provide technical leadership in the electrical and analytical characterization of packaged power electronics subject to extreme temperature cycling
disseminate research results through open literature publication, technical talks at conferences, and patents
develop internal and industrial and university collaborations to increase impact of research results.
Requirements
- U.S. citizenship
- Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
In addition to the basic requirements, applicants must also have 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 (ZP-III at NIST) level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience in the characterization of defect levels in candidate wide- and ultrawide-bandgap power electronics; experience in advanced in-situ scanning probe microscopy techniques for studies of charge transport in electrically active devices; experience in the design and fabrication of high temperature device and package characterization equipment; and experience in simulations of micro- and nano-scale thermal transport in solid-state devices.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done. We will credit all qualifying volunteer experience in your application.
The qualification requirements in this vacancy announcement are based on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook.
