This position is part of the Pipe and Sheet Metal Branch, Facility Division, Facilities Management in Washington, DC.
Duties
Repairs and keeps in proper working order heating systems including unit heater, fan coil units, control valves, radiators, automatic control valves, steam traps, pumps and other appurtenances for heating and cooling buildings.
Installs, repairs, and maintains all steam stations, piping and associated apparatus for heating, air, liquids, and saturated steam pressures from 0 to 250 pounds.
Uses gas, acetylene and electric welding equipment on various types and sizes of pipes, flanges, fittings.
Modifies, repairs and installs new and existing utility supply and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, air and gas distribution systems, water closets, tubs, showers and sludge systems.
Inspects, installs and makes repairs to sprinkler system and fire standpipe systems.
Performs satisfactory welds on high-pressure steam pipes.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship is Required
- Selectee must pass preemployment requirements prior to appointment.
- Males born after 12/03/59 must be registered for Selective Service.
- Selectee may be required to serve a one year probationary period.
- Selectee must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.
- Strength Test Required.
- Physical Examination required.

To qualify for the Pipefitter, KP -4204-00, you must meet the following requirements:
To minimally qualify for the KP-4204-00 level, you must meet the requirement below: Applicants must meet Screen Out/ Job Element #1: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision: Souder or brad copper pipes; Tread steel pipes; Rebuild commercial water closets; Read and interpret blueprints.
Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc.
Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading)
Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
