About the Position: This position is located with the Defense Health Agency. Working locations will be at the Brooke Army Medical Center, University Hospital SA, TX., and the Wilford Hall Ambulatory Surgical Center. The position requires shift work, typical shift hours are 6:30 pm to 6:30 am, 6:30am to 6:30 pm, or 8:00am to 8pm. Salary negotiation may be available for those candidates who are new to Federal service. Non-Federal work experience may be creditable for leave purposes.

Duties

Demonstrate methods, procedures and applications of respiratory care in the clinical phase of the Respiratory Specialist Program as students rotate through units such as medical intensive care, cardiac care, surgical intensive care, and recovery. Observe, provides assistance and evaluates students in the applications of prescribed respiratory therapy care and in the operation and basic maintenance of respiratory therapy equipment, ensuring patient safety. Demonstrate procedures such as the administration of oxygen and aerosols containing prescribed medication to patients using standard respiratory equipment such as cannulas, masks, and intermittent positive pressure breathing apparatus. Demonstrate the performance of chest physical therapy using techniques such as clapping, vibrating and postural drainage to facilitate the removal of secretions. Ensure students can instruct patients in the use of the incentive spirometer, and in how to perform breathing exercises and diaphragmatic breathing to improve their ability to breathe during periods of breathing difficulty or stress. Assist students in the drawing of arterial, venous and mixed venous blood samples from patients through arterial blood punctures and the operation of various equipment such as blood gas analyzers to analyze blood samples and identify abnormalities. Establishes and maintains student training records and maintains instructional materials. Conducts formal training in critical care, inpatient wards, emergency, and trauma environments.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • This position may require the incumbent to work during irregular work hours which may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and/or varying work schedules.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07). OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in education or a subject area related to the position to be filled, such as, Respiratory Therapy. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Education / Training Program AdministrationEducation and TrainingTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-07).
