The Director, Teaching and Learning Center (TLC), reports to the Air University Provost and Chief Academic Officer. In conjunction with the Deputy Provost and the Chief of Faculty Relations, the Director ensures the provision of developmental support to faculty and students across all of AU to improve students' attainment of learning outcomes by delivering faculty development programs and developing students' communication skills across all AU schools and organizations.

Duties

Directs the AU Teaching and Learning Center. Responsible for the day-to-day management of a center with a mix of government and variable-term contract employees. In consultation with AU leadership, develops the Center mission and supervises its operation, assuring that AUTLC activities are consonant with AU and Air Force objectives. Coordinates with the Chief of Faculty Relations and school/college deans to plan Center activities, focusing on the gathering, creating, and executing developmental learning resources, lessons, and events to improve the performance of AU faculty, students, and partners. Exercises supervisory personnel-management responsibilities. Advises and provides counsel to employees regarding policies, procedures, and directives of management. Identifies and creates developmental learning resources. Identifies and creates developmental learning resources. Keeps abreast of developments in educational theory, educational technology, learning methods and communication-support applications and incorporate appropriate developments into TC resources, lessons, and events/workshops. Collaborates with other agencies and learning professionals to maintain understanding of innovative learning methods and improve operations. Maintains personal credibility as a scholar, teacher and subject-matter expert. Serves as instructor for developmental presentations and lessons to AU faculty, students and partners that provide means, methods and techniques on how to teach and/or learn more effectively.

  • This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive civil service. This is an Administratively Determined position in the excepted service.

  • Incumbent may be required to travel by commercial or military conveyance to perform temporary duty.

Qualifications

Professional knowledge of current principles and philosophy of education, its theories, practices and techniques. Knowledge of current teaching, learning, writing and study methods, principles, and techniques. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with individuals and/or groups to present a positive image and to develop an effective working relationship. Ability to effectively prioritize and organize assigned activities to meet short and long-range goals and objectives. Incumbent must be able to manage and coordinate large and complex projects within time restraints while dealing with extremely high-level professionals. Ability to motivate faculty and students and to increase their interest in teaching and/or learning. Ability to evaluate information related to programs, materials, and individuals, determine effectiveness, identify problems and recommend solutions. Ability to use a computer and associated software for computer-based tutorials, word-processing, database, statistical analysis and graphic functions. Skill in designing and applying teaching methods and techniques appropriate to the background, interests and abilities of students. Knowledge of safety and security regulations, practices, and procedures. Knowledge of faculty teaching, research and service requirements, and the administrative requirements for supervising personnel is required. Ability to plan, organize, and direct the functions of the organization and to mentor, motivate, and appraise the staff of an organization through subordinate supervisors. Education

An earned terminal degree (Ph.D., Ed.D) is required.
