This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for STRL for Advanced Degree to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Serves as a Principal Investigator (PI) with responsibility for conducting and directing experimentation centralized in the fields of chemistry and biology.

Duties

Provides scientific knowledge and expertise in the fields of analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry, biological/chemical forensics, chemical biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, machine learning, artificial intelligence. Coordinate with funding agencies to develop related programming/projects and provide expert support via proposal/program review and securing funding for research and support personnel. Perform research studies and investigations that focus on the sciences of genetics, proteomics, cell growth, bioinformatics, computational biology, and synthetic biology. Conducting experimentation centralized in the application of bio detection through the fields of chemistry and biology. Establish contact with researchers and other scientists from various governmental agencies, academic, and private industry to support, address, and solve problems related to DoD research. Maintains all lab related documentation and ensure safety, security, surety, and non-surety procedures and standard operating procedures.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Position requires incumbent to obtain and maintain a security clearance at the Secret level.
  • Extended trial period for the Engineers and Scientists Occupational Family is three years.
  • This position requires business travel (TDY) to other duty locations 10% of the time.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement for Biologist: A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service which includes; 1. Experience with aquaculture or peptide synthesis. 2. Experience leading, conducting, and publishing research supporting chemical and biological defense 3. Experience developing novel methods used in analysis and characterization of biological materials. Or, Successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of the position, such as Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, etc. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) Or, Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
