The Supervisory Housekeeping Aid position is located within the Environmental Management Service at the Durham VA Medical Center in Durham NC. The Housekeeping Aid Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and supervising the staffing, cleaning, maintenance and sanitation of patient care, administrative and public areas of the Medical Center.

Duties
The major duties include but are not limited to:
Assigns the work units and plans the frequency of operations in order to maintain a high level of sanitation.
Approves/disapproves leave requests in such a manner to ensure the highest level of sanitation is maintained in all areas of the hospital.
Develops appropriate time management techniques that result in the planning of work and the use of equipment, facilities, and materials on a week-to-week or month-to-month basis for subordinates to assure superior sanitation levels.
Counsels employees, when indicated, due to such things as less than satisfactory performance, absenteeism, tardiness, abuse of sick leave, failure to be at work stations, etc.
Supervises the work of the Housekeeping staff and is responsible for the quality and quantity of work accomplished.
Ensures effective cleaning and sanitation procedures are being used by participating in an ongoing Quality Assurance program and by periodic work area inspections.
Monitors the stock of supplies in housekeeping supply rooms to assure maintenance of appropriate levels and oversees the issuance of supplies to employees to ensure they are adequately stocked.
Communicates with customers in a courteous, timely and constructive manner so that professional rapport is established, maintained and the needs of the customer are addressed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
**This occupation is currently approved for a Veterans Health Administration enterprise-wide Critical Skills Incentive (CSI). Candidates may be eligible for a lump sum CSI. The amount of lump sum CSI is determined based on appointment date and may be pro-rated as determined by the end date of the CSI. Eligible candidates will be required to sign a service agreement agreeing to an obligated service period and failure to complete the obligated service period may result in a debt for the unearned portion of the CSI*.*
Work Schedule: 7:00am-3:30pm, 3:00pm-11:30pm, 11:00pm-7:30am, Rotating weekends and Holidays

Physical Requirements: Incumbent must do a great deal of walking, standing, bending, and climbing of stairs. Must be physically able to remain engaged in manual work requiring muscular effort. Visual acuity must be sufficient to see dust, dirt, cobwebs, etc.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: The position demands continuous walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing. The work requires the occasional use of heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., wall washers, industrial type buffers) weighing over 50 pounds. The duties necessitate considerable dexterity, hand, foot, and eye coordination, and concentration as well as visual acuity to see dirt, dust and debris.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is normally performed indoors with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Some work may be performed outdoors where there may be exposed to varying degrees of heat and cold as well as inclement weather. PPE may be required in some circumstance as exposure to possible contagious diseases, blood and bloody secretion are inherent to this position. Care is required to avoid serious injuries (i.e., broken bones) when working on ladders, or when using 30-100-pound power equipment or handling hazardous materials.
