About the Position: This position is located in the Department of Public Health, Industrial Hygiene Service at Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC) with the Defense Health Agency, Indo-Pacific Market.
Position may require employee to work at Schofield Barracks and Tripler Army Medical Center based on mission needs.
Tripler Army Medical Center is a tobacco-free workplace. Tobacco products include, but are not limited to, smoking, smokeless tobacco, and electronic nicotine delivery devices.
Duties
Plan, measure, and quantitate the presence of toxic particulates, gases, and vapors in the work environment.
Design, calibrate, and evaluate sampling techniques and instruments used in work site evaluations.
Recommend use of specific personal protective equipment to individual activities as needed.
Plan and evaluate ventilation systems as required and prescribes appropriate corrective control.
Assist in serving as the Command representative and coordinator for surveys and inspections conducted by higher headquarters and other agency representatives.
Participate in the review of plan and inspection of sites for new or modified facilities, processes, and materials for evaluation of the adequacy of health hazard controls.
Maintain close liaison with the Directorate of Facility Engineering and Safety Offices in the solution of occupational health problems.
Participate in special studies or investigations related to a particular occupational health problem, complaint, or suspected occupational medical condition related to environmental factors and stresses.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

- The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10 % of the time.
- Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
- Incumbent must be able to possess or obtain and maintain Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Reporting System (DOEHRS-IH) Certification within six months of hire date.

This position has a basic education requirement that must be met before further consideration is given:
Basic Requirement for Industrial Hygienist: The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene: or
Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting with industrial hygiene safety inspections and work operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
OR
Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Industrial Hygienist, Occupational Hygienist and Environmental Specialist.
OR
Superior Academic Achievement. In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in Education above. Superior Academic Achievement is based on:(1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
OR
(2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.;
OR
(3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/).

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
Specialized Experience GS-09: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting workplace inspections to assess environmental conditions for potential hazards; conducting air sampling for building inspections; and preparing written reports citing workplace safety violations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Industrial Hygienist, Occupational Hygienist and Environmental Specialist.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
Specialized Experience GS-11: One year of specialized experience which includes performing industrial hygiene investigations; collecting environmental samples utilizing sampling equipment; providing recommendations to eliminate hazardous working conditions and educating workplace personnel on occupational health hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
OR
Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Industrial Hygienist, Occupational Hygienist and Environmental Specialist.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: Minimum of 12 semester hours of course work in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours as specified in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The work experience must have provided a professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of industrial hygiene and closely related sciences such as physics and engineering controls, and included all of the following areas: (1) the acquisition of quantitative and qualitative data, and the measurement of exposures for a variety of chemical, physical, and biological stresses; (2) the analysis of the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on the health and well-being of workers; and (3) the selection and recommendation of appropriate controls, including management, medical, engineering, education or training, and personal protective equipment.
