This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position is located on Tripler Army Medical Center installation, HI with the Public Health Command-Pacific, Industrial Hygiene Service Line. Incumbent will plan, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive Industrial Hygiene Program of complex DA industrial operations.

Duties

Establish an Industrial Hygiene Program. Conduct industrial hygiene surveys. Evaluate the effectiveness of controls in the abatement of health hazards. Advise on the abatement of health hazards. Advise safety, engineering, and scientific personnel on occupational health problems. Direct studies of specific industrial processes to evaluate potential health hazards. Develop guidance, directives and information bulletins related to an occupational health program. Identify potential health problems and symptoms, indicating possible occupational diseases resulting from the work environment.

Requirements

  • You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • One year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • A pre-employment physical is required, and periodic physicals may be required. Incumbent will have to pass a pre-employment physical to meet the physical efforts requirement. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Position is Mission Essential.
  • Able to obtain and maintain Secret Security Clearance.
  • Up to 30% TDY may be required.
  • This position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
  • This position requires you to be able to possess/maintain the DOEHRS cert within 6 months of hire date.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Basic Requirement: Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. OR Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum. OR Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes working in support of an industrial hygiene program; identifying occupational health hazards; evaluating work processes and materials; and developing control measures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Licensure/Certification: Must be able to possess/maintain the Defense Occupational and Evnrionmental Health Readiness System (DOEHRS) cert w/in 6 months of hire date. National Industrial Hygiene certification is highly preferred.
