The Office of the Inspector General is one of the best places to work in the Department of Justice and is one of the premier inspector general offices in federal government. We are seeking students with strong writing skills and ability to perform qualitative analysis, to join our team as a Policy Analyst Intern. You will work to gain practical work experience that augments your academic course of study.

Duties

If selected for this position, you will gain access to invaluable work experience as part of a well-respected team that is responsible for evaluations, inspections, and reviews of DOJ programs. As a Policy Analyst Intern, you will actively participate in and assist teams that review DOJ programs and functional areas to assess compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures, or participate in sensitive and complex congressional or DOJ management inquiries referred for review. This position will also provide some administrative support to the division. Formal and/or on-the-job training will be provided as needed. Duties will include, but are not limited to: Conducting research; Interviewing employees, senior managers, and others involved with the program, activity, or function under review; Collecting and analyzing relevant information from diverse data sources; Evaluating internal and external policy, and applying qualitative and quantitative analysis techniques to assess programs and processes; Communicating complex and/or controversial issues both in writing and verbally to colleagues or management; Creating recommendations to facilitate organizational or process changes; Analyzing management responses to report findings and recommendations and preparing formal replies; Researching and investigating new or improved business and management practices for application to agency programs or operations Receiving calls to the office and referring inquiries to appropriate employees, providing support for virtual and in-person meetings, and assisting with technical solutions for software and equipment; Reviewing documents for accuracy and completeness and typing or formatting correspondence and documents to adhere to rules, operations or business practices of the organization; Performing a variety of duties involving recordkeeping, data reporting, and information and property management; and using office automation software to produce a variety of materials including spreadsheets, instructions, procedures, and presentations, and working in a SharePoint environment Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progresses

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • You must be able to pass a background investigation and credit check and drug testing. You will be subject to random drug testing.
  • You must be registered for the Selective Service, if applicable.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Your application package must support your responses to the questionnaire.
  • You will be required to work a minimum of 16 hours a week during the school year.
  • If selected you must complete and sign a Pathways Participant Agreement and will be required to provide the OIG Pathways Program Officer with a copy of your transcript verifying continuous enrollment, GPA and grade requirements each semester.
  • You must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better for the duration of this internship (failure to meet this requirement will result in immediate termination).
  • You will participate in an OIG-wide mentorship program.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications Must be at least 16 years of age. Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a Technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, at a qualifying educational institution on a half-time or full-time basis. Must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA (grade point average) of 3.0 or better (must provide a transcript and proof of enrollment/acceptance letter); these standards will be in effect for the duration of the internship. Must maintain enrollment/continue education throughout the duration of employment under the Pathways Program. Minimum Qualifications: In addition to meeting the Basic Qualifications stated above, you must also meet the minimum qualifications for the appropriate grade level, or applicable general or specialized experience, or a combination of both To qualify for the GS-5 level, you must have 1) Have completed 4 academic years of post-high school education leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree in preferred fields of Public Policy, Political Science, Economics, Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Business Management, Public Administration, or Statistics; 2) OR have completed a bachelor's degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above; 3) OR a combination of both specialized experience and education as described below Specialized experience at the GS-5 level is defined as the ability to conduct research relevant to a project topic; assist in the analysis and interpretation of data, monitor and analyze issues and trends, and assist in the development of logical and well-supported findings with feasible recommendations for corrective actions to address identified problems. At this level the applicant is expected to be knowledgeable about software that facilitates data analysis and the timely preparation of work products. To qualify for the GS-7 level, you must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level OR be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a graduate or professional school, at a qualifying educational institution on a half-time or full-time basis and have completed at least one full year of graduate level education (preferred in the field of Public Policy, Political Science, Economics, Criminal Justice, Business Administration, Business Management, Public Administration, or Statistics), OR have a combination of both specialized experience and education as described below. Specialized experience isdefined as the ability to conduct research relevant to a project topic; assist in the analysis and interpretation of data, monitor and analyze issues and trends, and assist in the development of logical and well-supported findings with feasible recommendations for corrective actions to address identified problems. At this level the applicant is expected to be knowledgeable about software that facilitates data analysis and the timely preparation of work products. OR One full year of graduate education Or Superior academic achievement at the bachelors level in a degree related to or other related fields of study. ( You must provide transcripts)

Education

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above education requirements if you can show that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
