The Maintenance Mechanic is assigned to the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor (East Campus) and the Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor (West Campus) Engineering Service, Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System (CAVHCS). The primary function of this position is to provide a quick response to simple maintenance and repairs to locksmith, painting and carpentry. Approximately 55% of incumbent's time will involve simple locksmith work, 30% carpentry work and approximately 15% painting.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities will include: Performing maintenance and repair of architectural and mechanical components of buildings Installing, modifying, and repairing furniture items, doors, windows, floor coverings, baseboards, and signage Conducting inspections and performing routine maintenance on area of responsibility assigned Constructing/framing metal stud dry wall partitions and drywalling, mudding, taping, and plastering Patching and painting various surfaces Keeping storage areas clean, orderly, and organized to maintain an accurate inventory of supplies, tools, and materials. Planning and measuring various materials according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions Reading and interpreting work orders, instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes Using and maintaining equipment and tools common to various trades Performing preventative maintenance on shop tools and equipment to ensure safe and proper function Working with wood or wood substitute materials, gypsum board or fiber-cement board, concrete/rebar, glass, etc. Installing laminate and protective coverings on various surfaces Laying concrete block brick and performing minor masonry repairs Performing related duties as required. Performs major overhaul and repair of all types of cylinder locks, padlocks, mortise locks, deadbolt locks, electric locks, rim locks, key-in-knob locks, time locks, safes and vaults. Removes locks from doors and safes, completely disassembles, determines repairs required, cleans and repairs broken parts or replaces with new parts. Develops codes for cores, keys and locks. Develops complete key systems as required, selecting cores, keys and coding each as required. Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Position Description Title/PD#: Maintenance Mechanic/PD10717A Physical Requirements: Performs work that requires the ability to use a wide variety of hand and power tools, lifting large heavy articles or assemblies, climbing ladders or scaffolding, maintaining body balance, reaching and pulling, working on overhead items and eye-hand coordination, bend, stoop, crawl and climb, and working in close space. May be exposed to hazards of tripping, falling, cuts, contusions, abrasions. Working Conditions: Work will be performed in a shop setting, as well as, throughout the entire Medical Center. It may be performed outdoors and is subject to extreme heat and in inclement weather. May be subject to a variety of hazards, such as: dust, dirt, noise, vapors, fumes, solvents, infectious agents and grease. Physical injury from lifting and handling heavy pieces of construction material and equipment and danger from falling from ladders and scaffolds.
