This position is located in the Engineering Service of the VA Medical Center in Tuskegee, AL.
Duties
Responding to requests for maintenance and repairs for locks, painting, and carpentry;
Overhauling and repairing all types of locks, safes, and vaults;
Ensuring special security requirements and meeting fire codes;
Removing, disassembling, cleaning, repairing, and replacing locks or associated parts;
Picking or neutralizing locking devises as required;
Fabricating parts to close tolerances without drawings or specifications;
Using cutting machines and making impressions for extra keys;
Developing codes for cores, keys, and locks;
Developing complete key systems;
Coordinating work with other shops and maintaining liaison with security personnel;
Providing training to employees and inspecting work;
Performing carpentry duties to maintain, remodel, alter, and construct wood and wood substitute articles for buildings and structures;
Fabricating and repairing cabinets, cupboards, chairs, tables, shelves, signs, plaques, etc.;
Planning, designing, and laying out work from blueprints, specifications, and sketches;
Preparing and coating surfaces by brushing, rolling, and spraying to ensure a smooth textured and decorative appearance;
Determining the methods, techniques, devices, and materials to be used;
Preparing coating materials by tinting, toning, matching, blending, and mixing-in various additives;
Planning the materials, tools, and techniques needed to complete work;
Performing related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm.

Qualifications
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The position requires the ability to stand, stoop, bend, climb, lift heavy objects, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time. The Maintenance Mechanic works from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms, operates a variety of hand and power tools and equipment, and lifts and carries heavy materials. Work is performed in all types of weather, both indoors and outdoors in heat and cold, and on rooftops and high scaffolding and ladders. The Maintenance Mechanic is subject to falls, noise from power tools, dirt, dust, metal fragments, sawdust and wood chips, cuts, splinters, and other injuries associated with the use of hand and power tools. The employee may be required to work with or around potentially hazardous substances found in a hospital setting and must wear protective equipment as needed.
