A Student Trainee the Legal Division will be expected to handle daily clerical tasks as assigned by management including: intake of cases and correspondence; utilizing Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel; prepare case materials for assignment and distribution; appropriate filing of records and document maintenance. A Student Trainee will also work under a hybrid schedule with virtual and in-person weekly reporting requirements.  

Duties

Answers the telephone and is the initial office contact. Ability to communicate orally in order to receive and refer telephone callers. Personally responds to routine questions pertaining to the mission and functions of the assigned office. Handles routine requests for information of a recurring nature and refers other inquiries to appropriate staff member in assigned office. General knowledge of the mission, functions and organization of the FDIC. Reads directives and instructional material pertaining to the functions of the assigned office in order to be aware of new, revised, or amended procedures for that office. Performs basic data entry and routine report generation. Skill in establishing and maintaining office files and records in accordance with established procedures. Participates in special projects assigned by the supervisor, team leader and/or higher level staff within the assigned office. Ability to meet and deal with persons both within and outside the immediate office. Performs a variety of clerical and typing duties in support of the assigned office. Establishes, maintains and revises a variety of files and records in connection with the work of assigned office. Knowledge of basic office software packages currently in use within FDIC, including word processors, spreadsheet and database software.

Qualifications

Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sector. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious/spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You must meet the eligibility and qualifications by the closing date of the announcement. To be found eligible for this program, applicants must: (1) be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a degree seeking program at a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis; (2) have a minimum cumulative (overall) GPA of 2.50 out of 4.0; and (3) be in good academic standing. Education requirements are established by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and must be met by close of announcement. Below are the requirements by grade: CG-03 level – Completion of 1 full academic year of post-high school study; OR have six months of general experience to include: progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled; OR have a combination of education and experience: equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. CG-04 level – Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree; OR have 1 year of general experience to include: progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled; OR have a combination of education and experience: equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements.CG-05 level – Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school study leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree; OR must have completed at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the CG-4 grade level or above in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience in intake cases and correspondence; tracking both case paperwork and assignments using Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel; prepare case materials for assignment and distribution up through the supervisory chain; data entry; photocopy case materials upon completion; and create case files and ensure the appropriate filing of records and document maintenance; OR have a combination of education and experience as listed below. Please note, only education in excess of 60 undergraduate hours may be used in this calculation. Combination of Education and Experience - Your current education completed is credited as a percentage of the education required for the grade level and your current experience is credited as a percentage of the total experience required for the grade level. The two percentages are added and must equal 100% in order to qualify for the desired grade level. An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.
