This position is a member of the Administrative Support System which is part of the Health Administration Service (HAS) at the Boise VA Medical Center in Boise, ID. The primary duties of the File Clerk are to provide internal and external file room support to staff, consultants and patients.
Duties

The major duties include but are not limited to:
Processes, scans/indexes and files both VA and Non-VA medical and administrative documents into Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS)/Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VISTA) or the patient's paper medical record;
Retrieves and delivers medical records throughout the facility;
Performs chart reviews on paper and electronic documents to ensure they are complete, prior to them being scanned/indexed/filled into CPRS/VISTA or the paper medical record;
Sends, retrieves and receives records from the long-term storage center and other VA medical centers;
Analyzes and researches numerous and varied medical and administrative reports received from non-VA health care facilities when making determination as to how the documents are to be indexed;
Uses processes and procedures to sort, index and perform quality control on incoming clinical and administrative documents in order to assure ease of retrieval for users;
Maintains a record request database;
Performs clerical duties, including, the use of computerized records tracking, associated with the retention, maintenance, disposition and control of administrative and medical records;
Protects the confidentiality of patient information, access to computer files and release of access codes, according to established guidelines and policies; and,
Performs all other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 8:00am-4:30pm

Qualifications
To qualify for this position at the GS-4 level, you must meet one of the following:
Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of general experience in a position that was progressively responsible clerical, office or other work that indicates your ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the File Clerk position. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~
Education: Successfully completed two (2) years of education above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school. Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post-high school education (beyond the first year) and general experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work with computers is mainly sedentary in an office environment; however, paper records retrieval, filing and management involves long hours of standing, with extensive bending, reaching, lifting, stooping, pulling and other physical exertion or strain. Some work will be performed in a warehouse setting and requires packing boxes (whose weight will typically exceed 20 pounds) and otherwise preparing records for shipment.
