This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security, United States Coast Guard, Deputy Commandant For Operations (CG-DCO), Mariner Eval Div, in Martinsburg, WV. 

Duties

This position serves as a Legal Instruments Examiner, responsible for providing guidance and customer support to Professional Qualification Evaluations, Safety and Suitability Evaluations (SSE), Mariner Information Call Center (MICC), and Regional Exam Center Operations staff members or other supporting roles at the National Maritime Center (NMC).

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • This position requires a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI).
  • The position requires a valid state driver's license.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Unofficial transcripts are required at the time of application.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.

Qualifications

At the GS-04 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-03 grade level in the federal service. General experience is the experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of the position and is typically in or related to this line of work.  Examples of generalized experience include:  Responding to in-person customer inquiries and requests for assistance; providing remote assistance (e.g., via telephone, email, or mail) to customers; establishing priorities to meet deadlines. OR Two years of education above high school. At the GS-05 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level in the federal service.    Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with particular ability, skills and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typical in or related to this line of work.  Examples of specialized experience includes: Review applications, respond to inquiries both oral and written received from the public and/or governmental agencies, draft routine correspondence for signature. OR Combination of Education or Experience; Equivalent combinations of successfully completed post high school education and experience may be used to meet the total experience requirements. OR Four years of education above high school. National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.  If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
