The recent graduates program targets individuals who have graduated recently from qualifying educational institutions or programs. To be eligible, applicants must apply within 2 years of degree or certificate completion, except for veterans precluded from doing so due to their military service obligations, who will have up to 6 years after degree or certificate completion. Successful applicants will be placed in a dynamic, career development program.

Duties

Reviews incident reports and conducts analysis to determine if the incident is an OSHA recordable. Manages the IRIS system and edit reports as needed. Contacts Supervisors or employees with additional questions about incident reports. Organizes and distributes safety information, such as pamphlets, posters, and memorandums. Actively participates with leadership, staff, and local authorities to develop fire protection plans. Manages annual fire drills and works with local authorities and leadership. Will coordinate annual fire inspections and work with field site SHA's to compile annual safety inspections. Assists in maintaining applicable safety regulations, guidelines, manuals, safety plans, and policy documents. Leads the DISA Safety and Occupational Health Committee. Records attendance and creates meeting agendas. Updates members with relevant information. Assists in Safety Program Evaluations and Field Site Inspections.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement: This position has a positive education requirement. Applicants must meet the basic educations requirements in order to be found minimally qualified for the position. Undergraduate or Graduate Education: Major study - safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Experience in or related to safety and occupational health that provided the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. OR Certification as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Health Physicist (CHP), or similar certification that included successful completion of a written examination meets the requirements for GS-5. Applicants may also qualify for higher grade levels based on their education and/or experience. Specialized Experience: For the GS-07, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable in difficulty and responsibility to GS-05 if outside the Federal service, is required. Specialized Experience is defined as experience assisting in the planning, organizing, and evaluation of safety and occupational health programs; implementing local safety and occupational health policies; and investigating and documenting accidents and mishaps. For the GS-09, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in level of difficulty and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable in difficulty and responsibility to GS-07 if outside the Federal service, is required. Specialized Experience is defined as experience applying recognized safety, environmental, and health principles, standards, laws and techniques to assist in the management and evaluation of a safety or occupational health program; Provide technical advice and guidance to management and employees on occupational safety and health requirements; Assist in the development of standards, regulations, practices and procedures to eliminate or control potential hazards; and assist in inspecting work practices policies and procedures for compliance with established safety and occupational health policies or standards. **This Job Opportunity Announcement is using an additional online assessment tool to evaluate applicants. Who May Be Considered: Individuals who have obtained a qualifying Associates, Bachelor's, Master's, Professional, Doctorate, Vocational or Technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution, within the previous 2 years. OR Individuals who will obtain a qualifying Associates, Bachelor's, Master's, Professional, Doctorate, Vocational or Technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution within 90 days from the date of application. Applicants must provide proof of degree conferral prior to appointment OR Veterans (as defined in 5 U.S.C. 2108) who were unable to apply within 2 years of obtaining a qualifying Associates, Bachelor's, Master's, Professional, Doctorate, Vocational or Technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution due to their military service obligation. Veterans have a full 2-year eligibility period to apply upon his/her release or discharge from active duty. The eligibility period for veterans must be within 6 years of degree completion. In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirements, qualified applicants must also possess the quality of experience as it relates to how closely or to what extent an applicant's background, recency of experience, education, and training are relevant to the duties and responsibilities of the announced position. Candidates must clearly demonstrate the possession of knowledge, skills and abilities, or competencies necessary to successfully perform the work of the position at the appropriate level to be qualified for the position. Substitution of education for GS-07: Completed one full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the position. Substitution of education for GS-09: Completed Master's degree or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D in a field that is directly related to this position that may be substituted to meet the specialized experience requirement. To be creditable, education must have been obtained from an accredited college or university. (You MUST submit transcripts or proof of education to verify your claim.)

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: One (1) year of graduate education may be substituted to meet the specialized experience requirement when education is directly related to the position being filled. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and experience may be used to meet total experience requirements.
