This position is located within the Maintenance and Operations Section, Engineering Service. The incumbent is responsible for providing leadership in the Energy Plant at one of the two separate divisions of the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, GA.
Duties
Duties include but not limited to:
Perform as a journeyman Air Conditioning Equipment Operator performing tasks involved in the operation and maintenance of heating and cooling plant equipment serving a large medical center.
Performs routine scheduled preventative maintenance and maintains records of scheduled operations.
Perform minor repairs on three gas/oil fired steam boilers, three boiler feedwater pumps, two condensate transfer pumps and associated equipment.
Perform minor repairs on centrifugal water chillers, induced draft cooling towers, chilled water pumps, condenser water pumps, and associated equipment.
Perform starts stops and regulates the chillers, boilers, and associated equipment as load demands.
Knowledge of the function and purpose of all equipment in the systems operated.
Knowledge of the theories, practices and techniques for the operation of steam boilers, centrifugal chillers, air compressors, electrical distribution systems, energy management system and associated equipment.
Ability to apply this knowledge and skills in the operating and repairing of steam boilers, centrifugal chillers and associated equipment with a minimum of guidance from the supervisor.
Ability to use items such as flue gas analyzer, volt-ohm-meter, and ammeter to test equipment.
Ability to use various power and hand tools in the repair of equipment, i.e., drill motors and presses, portable and bench grinders, pipe threading machines and metal band saws.
Ability to detect malfunctions in equipment, locate and troubleshoot the problem.
Assists mechanics in the major repair of equipment or in the off-season overhaul or maintenance of equipment.
Performs minor repairs, such as replacing mechanical seals, bearings, valves, pipe fittings, and motors. In addition, repair of insulation, repacking valves, and piping if required.
