The Air Conditioning Equipment Operator is assigned to the Energy Plant with which is located in the Engineering Service under the general supervision from the Plant Foreman. They are a representative of the Engineering Service during non-administrative hours, weekends and holidays.
Duties
The Air Conditioner Equipment Operator performs monthly and annual boiler safety device testing as required by VHA Directives. Testing procedures are in accordance with VHA Boiler Plant Safety Devices Testing Manual. These procedures require knowledge above and beyond normal plant operating practices. Performs other duties as assigned as they relate to the overall mission of the service and the work of the station.
Duties may include but are not limited to:
A comprehensive knowledge of the function and purpose of all equipment in the systems operated.
Knowledge of the theories, practices and techniques for the operation of steam boilers, centrifugal chillers, air compressors, electrical distribution systems, energy management system and associated equipment. Ability to apply this knowledge and skills in the operating and repairing of steam boilers, centrifugal chillers and associated equipment with a minimum of guidance from the supervisor.
Must be skilled in combustion techniques and to make adjustments to firebox variables such as fuel flow and air fuel ratio compensate in variations of fuel composition.
Must be able to apply math and reading skills to complete reports and logs. Must be able to interpret written and verbal instructions, exercise writing and verbal communicating skills for plant records, and relating shift activities to coworkers and plant foreman.
Ability to detect malfunctions in equipment, locate and troubleshoot the problem.
Performs minor repairs, such as replacing mechanical seals, bearings, valves, pipe fittings, and motors.
Monitors and communicates with appropriate persons per medical center policy concerning station fire alarms, disaster notification and medical gas alarm systems.
Performs monthly and annual boiler safety device testing as required by VHA Directives.
Work Schedule: 12 or 8 hour, compressed rotating shifts

Physical Requirements: Regular walking tours of the plant to conduct inspections of equipment which include some lifting, kneeling, standing, climbing and stooping. Repairs occasionally require working in awkward and cramped positions and lifting up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions: Most work is done inside with occasional exposure to surrounding temperature in excess of 100 degrees Fahrenheit, chemicals used in water treatment, steam in excess of 300 degrees Fahrenheit and loud noises. The use of protective clothing or gear, such as rubber aprons, hard toe-boots, hearing protection, safety goggles, gloves, or face shields, are frequently required.
