You will serve as a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic in the Public Works Business Line of NAVFAC ENGINEERING CMD MID-ATLANTIC.

Duties

You will make repairs to a variety of heavy mobile equipment and vehicles which have mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electric systems, controls, or features not commonly found on automobiles and ordinary transport trucks and buses. You will determine the cause of malfunctions and make repairs to a variety of heavy mobile equipment and vehicles. You will complete major repairs, overhauls, and modifications, and conduct functional and performance tests on completed work. You will measure, fit, and install components, such as pistons, valves, bearings, gears, and cylinders, to specified clearances. You will read and interpret instructions, standards, job orders, drawings, and blueprints to determine the overall inspection needs and quality checkpoints for heavy mobile equipment repair work.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision as demonstrated by: 1) Use heavy duty hand tools and special tools and test equipment to repair, maintain, modify and test gasoline and diesel-powered mobile equipment such as bulldozers, cranes, graders, power shovels, trucks, buses, firefighting, weight handling (to 150-ton capacity), crawler cranes and emergency generators (up to 700 KW) and other miscellaneous equipment. 2) Ability to diagnose problems, disassemble, repair, fit, assemble and adjust systems, such as torque converters, planetary gears, multi-shift transmissions, fuel injection systems, air systems, compressors, valves, electrical systems, including wiring and delicate, complex electrical controls. 3) Make modifications to equipment to meet requirements.
