Duties

Serving as a Automotive Worker (Helper) WG-5823-5 makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) team and mission. This position is located in Glynco, GA in the Mobile Assets Branch within Assets and Logistics Management Division under the Mission and Readiness Support Directorate The primary purpose of this Automotive Mechanic (Helper), WG-5823-05 position is to assist in the direct maintenance actions required to ensure all assigned DHS vehicles are in a safe and serviceable condition and will serve as an Automotive Worker reporting to the Mobile Assets Branch/Garage Automotive Mechanic Supervisor. The Mobile Assets Branch provides oversite of the acquisition, maintenance, operation, utilization, and the disposal of the FLETC fleet of government owned automotive, marine, and other mobile equipment assets. These assets are used to support administrative, training, security, and maintenance activities necessary for the performance of the FLETC mission. Typical work assignments include: Will perform work requiring light to moderate physical effort and the use of common hand and power tools as well as other automotive and marine maintenance shop equipment and systems. Accomplishes minor maintenance services to include check, adjust and changing crankcase, differential, and transmission lubricants; check and adjust fluid levels in brakes, batteries, radiators, and power steering reservoirs. Will test, replace or service batteries; replace oil, fuel, and air filters; install or replace accessories; replace or adjust drive belts; locate leaks and tighten fasteners to manufacture's specifications; replace and tighten hose connections; replace windshield wiper blades, lights bulbs and fuses. The position will inspect tire conditions, adjust air pressure as well as rotate, mount, dismount, repair, and balance tube and tubeless tires using tire mounting and balancing machines. May occasionally perform duties detailing, washing/waxing vehicles and assisting higher graded Automotive Mechanics in the Garage. The position accomplishes the repairs within established industry safety practices and environmental waste handling policies. Inspect and replaces brake pads, drums and rotors, master cylinders, and may use a brake lathe to resurface brake drums and rotors. Uses a maintenance automated information system to create records of work performed, materials used, costs and labor time spent performing work.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state issued driver's license to conduct official government business.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Universal United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification for handling of refrigerants within 180 days of employment.
  • This position is eligible for situational-only telework based on agency policy.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class C state driver’s license, possess and maintain a safe driving record.
  • Must demonstrate that they are medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely in accordance with the standards and procedures established.
  • Must be able to obtain certification to operate a forklift and meet the physical fitness requirements to do so safely.

  • Must successfully pass a background investigation for Suitability/Fitness (5N – Non-Sensitive, Moderate Risk).
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • This position is Emergency Essential and required to sustain FLETC’s operations under all conditions, e.g., in the event of a localized emergency situation, such as inclement weather, interruptions to power, or closure of DHS operations or services,
  • Required to undergo initial and random drug testing for illegal drug use. Employment is contingent upon favorable results.
  • Must be able to meet job-related medical and/or fitness standards. You will be subject to a pre-appointment and annual physical examination.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort: Work requires long periods of standing, walking and handling of heavy objects. Frequently bends, reaches, and works in awkward positions. Work may be performed in lube pits or from racks. The employee will be required to lift weighting up to 65 pounds on a regular basis and occasionally be required to lift or move objects weighing 70 pounds or more with the assistance of other employees or with lifting devices. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside. Generally, the work area inside is dirty, oily, and greasy. Outside work exposes the employee to various weather conditions to include cold, heat, rain, snow, or icy conditions. There is constant exposure to minor cuts, bruises and burns. The employee will adhere to safety procedures and may be required to wear safety equipment that is hot and uncomfortable.
