Duties

Serving as a Automotive Mechanic WG-5823-11 makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) team and mission. This position is located in the Mobile Assets Branch of the Assets and Logistics Management Division within the Mission and Readiness Support Directorate in Glynco, GA. Typical work assignments include: Performing a variety of welding processes utilizing several different techniques in order to repair, overhaul, or fabricate major components and systems. In accordance with work orders or oral instructions, diagnosing worn or poorly adjusted parts through visual and auditory checks, and/or with a small variety of test equipment such as diagnostic computers, test lamps, multi-meters or other specialty testers. Performing vehicle pre-inspections to verify/diagnose customer complaints. Installation of police equipment. Preparing lesson plans and conducting briefings to the instructional staff and advanced driver training students related to vehicle alterations, operations, and utilizations.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid state issued driver's license to conduct official government business.
  • This position is not eligible for telework.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Overtime may be required.
  • Weekends and federal holidays may be required.
  • Must be able to meet job-related medical and/or fitness standards. Subject to an initial and annual physical examination that measures visual, hearing, and physical acuity.
  • You may be required to serve a one-year probationary period.

Qualifications

While there is no minimum amount of training or experience required, in this position you will function as a journeyman automotive mechanic and your experience should include knowledge of the full range of automotive trade with experience performing such duties as troubleshooting, repairing tearing down overhauling and rebuilding a variety of major systems for a variety of vehicles. Physical Effort: Makes repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions. They frequently stand for long periods of time, bend, stoop, crawl under vehicles, and make repairs in other tight spaces. They frequently lift, handle, and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 40 lbs. Working Conditions: Servicing of equipment may be performed in shop or on-site. Most work is done inside where it is drafty and noisy, and fumes from vehicles are usually present. Frequently stands on hard surfaces for long periods of time. Crawls under vehicles and makes repairs while on hard, usually damp surfaces. Occasionally performs repairs outside, sometimes in bad weather. Dirt, dust, and grease are always present. Vehicle fluids, such as battery acids and hydraulic fluids, may cause burns or irritate the skin. Frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, bruises, shocks, burns, and strains. In addition to on-the-job training, the position will complete any formal classroom training specified in the employee's individual development plan (IDP). Upon completion of training, the position will be able to assume higher level duties on a regular basis. Performance of duties will primarily require the operation of light general-purpose vehicles and medium duty trucks and vans. Driver is required to obtain and maintain a valid state driver's license to operate these type vehicles. Heavy duty trucks, wreckers, and buses may also be operated when performing diagnostic test drives. Sometimes these vehicles may also be used to move materials to and from remote work sites or to recover disabled vehicles. Off-center use of heavy-duty vehicles to include buses and wreckers will require the applicable commercial driver's license with appropriate endorsements. All requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
