Incumbent is assigned to the Plumbing & Mechanical Unit as a Maintenance Worker at San Juan VA Medical Center.

Duties

Major Duties: Incumbent is in charge of the maintenance of sophisticated mechanical and electrical machinery and systems in the facility. Performs routine and extensive range of work in the repair and general maintenance within the facility and clinics throughout Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands. Building Service Equipment such as chillers, cold water generators, supply fans, exhaust fans, air handling units, pumps, compressors, motors, cooling towers, piping, instruments, laundry equipment, swimming pool equipment, air filters. Safety equipment such as vacuum and pressure relief valves, all control valves, emergency relief equipment. Utility equipment such as steam boiler, generator, supply, storage, and distribution systems for water, steam compressed air, and oxygen etc. Fire protection equipment such as pipelines, pumps, alarm system, control valves, fire hydrants, standpipes, and fire hoses. Personal Property Equipment such Forklifts, wheelchairs, patient beds (mech & elect.), carts, sterilizers, automatic files, hydraulic loading docks, vertical lifters etc. Performs all duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm Recruitment & Relocation Incentives: Not authorized

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The work performed by employee is related to station level construction projects and requires lifting, carrying, pulling weights up to 75 pounds. Adjustments, repairs and replacement of parts and materials for assemblies may require kneeling, stooping, climbing ladders, reaching over, under and into equipment while in cramped or awkward position. Since the work in performed in a construction environment the employee is frequency exposed to abrasions, cuts, burns or shock, or other serious injury from slips, falls, moving parts, equipment or materials. Frequently works in cramped spaces and around hot, oily and dusty surfaces. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). The hiring facility will interview or test to evaluate the applicant's ability to write and speak in English and Spanish. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
