The Facility Management Service of the San Juan VA Medical Center is recruiting for a Maintenance Mechanic (Leader). This position works under the supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor in the Construction Section and is responsible for assuring work assignments are carried out. The Construction Section is composed of several construction disciplines, including electricians, plumbers, maintenance mechanics and carpenters.
Duties
The Maintenance Mechanic Leader will perform in areas that are currently undergoing construction, asbestos abatement and will assist Maintenance Supervisor in preparing a list of materials and supplies needed per assigned project. Must have a working knowledge in carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, welding, air conditioning, refrigeration, asbestos abatement, medical gases and mechanic operations in order to lead other workers effectively. Must be able to read, write, and apply written/oral instructions. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Obtain information or decisions from the Maintenance Supervisor, Service Chief, VA Construction Section or Project Manager of the assigned project on problems that occur during the work hours
Maintain current knowledge and answer questions of other workers on procedures, policies, and written instructions.
Ensure work is distributed so that all workers remain busy while checking progress to make sure work sequence, procedures and deadlines have been met.
Ensure instructions are followed at all times and personal protective equipment procedures are followed. Status and progress of work should be reported to Maintenance Supervisor, Chief, Project Manager and VA Construction Section.
Assist Maintenance Supervisor in keeping a daily log of all employees hours worked per project.
Prepare project schedule, quality control plan, cost estimate and staff needed per assigned project.
Assist Maintenance Supervisor in preparing and maintaining payroll.
Setting the pace and demonstrating proper work methods to other workers.
Assist in performing emergency repairs and must follow blueprints, sketches and work orders of items to be constructed/altered, using own initiative.
Work Schedule: 6:00am - 2:30pm (Monday-Friday)

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Must be in good physical condition to spend considerable time standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, stooping, and lifting moderate and heavy loads up to 75 pounds.
