This position is located in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service of the VA Medical Center in Tampa, FL.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** The Pathology Specialist provides service in Anatomic Pathology under the direction and supervision of the Chief of Surgical Pathology and Supervisor of Health Sciences. The Pathology Assistant functions as a team with the anatomic pathologists by participating in the accessioning, examination, dissection, and processing of tissue samples, functioning as an autopsy assistant, and when necessary performing autopsies and generating autopsy reports to be reviewed by the pathologist. Working as a team with the Chiefs of Surgical Pathology and Autopsy, and the Supervisor of Health Sciences to help coordinate the operations of the Surgical Pathology and Autopsy sections, including the education of pathology residents. The Pathology Specialist independently plans and carries out assignments to accomplish the goals of the service in a timely manner. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm. BASIC EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT: A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field or health/allied sciences that is appropriate to the work of this position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Transcripts required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GS-12: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in Federal service. Specialized experience includes: performing duties as a pathology/pathologist's assistant or specialist; performing gross evaluation of human surgical specimens; utilizing hospital based computer software systems; preparing frozen section slides; performing gross evaluation of human autopsies. This experience must be detailed in your resume to receive credit. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work of this position requires long periods of standing or sitting while performing gross examinations and occasional lifting or pulling of heavy items (bodies, extremities) and above average dexterity in dissection of specimens and cutting frozen sections. The work involves regular and recurring exposures to irritating and volatile organic solutions, and potentially infectious material. Protective gear and special safety precautions are required and will be supplied.
