Operates large trucks up to and including 17 1/2 ton capacity and up to 45-passenger buses for the transportation of personnel, supplies, mail and equipment between Baltimore and Washington DC offices and other destinations as requested; performs additional duties as required. Duties

Must be able to perform work without more than normal supervision. Operates large trucks with a capacity of 4 tons and over for the transportation of supplies and equipment between numerous points in the general Baltimore-Washington area, and occasionally to other destinations in or out of state as required. Assignments include the hauling of supplies between manufacturers, printers, central warehouses, bureau offices and supply and storage facilities. Transports files to central file locations and waste materials to the dump. Assists in loading and unloading the truck; avoids overloading, distributes and/or balances the load to prevent damage to the vehicle or to the materials being hauled. Recommends changes to preplanned routes and modifies or selects alternate route to destinations when required by detours and/or unusual traffic conditions. As assigned, operates light and medium trucks or passenger vehicles for the transportation of mail, supplies, equipment and passengers. Daily inspects vehicle to ensure that gas, oil, tires, lights, brakes, etc, are in proper condition. Performs minor maintenance, such as replacing bulbs and cleaning windows. Makes emergency road repairs as necessary. Keeps daily automotive vehicle report showing destination, times of arrival and departure, quantities of supplies and equipment carried and condition of vehicle. Reports all accidents and any vehicle defects that need repair. Makes deliveries to predetermined receiving stations and pickups from predetermined dispatch stations. Makes internal building pick up and deliveries as instructed by supervisor. Operates a motor vehicle to chauffeur the Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner and Executive Staff between the agency's Baltimore and Washington, DC offices or other destinations. Performs special duties in the Commissioner’s Baltimore and DC offices, such as delivery or pickup of sensitive documents, filing and sorting documents and duplicating speeches, documents and other materials; ensures confidentiality of material.

Qualifications

To qualify for this WG-07 MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR position you must demonstrate: (1)a valid Class B, State of Maryland (or equal) Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (2) the Screen Out AND (3) the five individual Job Elements (1) SCREEN OUT: ABILITY TO PERFORM MVO WORK WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION At a minimum, you must have a fundamental understanding of motor vehicle and transportation operations based on the following knowledge, skills and abilities: (1) Ability to safely operate a variety of motor vehicles (2) Ability to interpret instructions or directions related to the operation of motor vehicles (3) Ability to maintain motor vehicles in safe and operational condition Your level of work (at a minimum) must not require more than regular spot checks and/or guidance during progress and upon completion. (2) JOB ELEMENTS: Describe duties you perform that show you have (at a minimum): Ability to operate motor vehicles -- general skill in maneuvering large trucks and/or passenger busses on familiar public roads and highways under favorable circumstances and normal road conditions. Ability to follow work practices -- assist with loading and arranging cargo, follow planned routes, recognize the need for routine maintenance and provide information needed to complete driver reports, as requested and under general supervision, Ability to interpret instructions -- basic understanding of common instructions pertaining to motor vehicles, driving and roads (for example, written or verbal directions, standard traffic and road signs or basic guidelines for loading/unloading of cargo) and apply this information as requested and under general supervision. Ability to drive safely -- apply common safety requirements while operating large-motor-vehicles as evidenced by my satisfactory record of safe driving assignments. Reliability and dependability -- adequate record of adherence to established times, routes and stops while safely and efficiently transporting passengers and/or cargo (for example, exhibiting occasional tardiness in reporting for an assigned shift/route or experiencing sporadic delays in completing assigned itineraries). CONDITIONS OF POSITION: Due to the nature of work in this position, the following conditions are essential for successful performance, and you must fully comply with these conditions to meet performance requirements. (1) Must be able to perform work without more than normal supervision. (2) MVOs in this position must possess and maintain an active Class B, State of Maryland (or equal) Commercial Driver's License (CDL). (3) Moderate to heavy physical effort is used in handling of objects weighing up to 40 pounds and occasionally handling objects weighing over 70 pounds. (4) Medium physical effort is required in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. (5) Must be able to sit and drive for long periods. (6) Must have coordination of eyesight, hands, and feet and normal, natural, or corrected vision. (7) Drives in all types of traffic and weather and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents. (8) Is subject to cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving. (9) Works in all weather conditions, usually inside an enclosed vehicle, but are occasionally exposed to bad weather conditions. (10) May have to make emergency repairs in rain, snow, or other unpleasant conditions. (11) MVOs in this position are required to work a flexible fixed shift, which may require overtime, weekends and recall for emergencies].
