The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (Bureau) Honors Paralegal Program is designed to provide exceptionally talented entry level individuals including recent college graduates with rigorous paralegal experience gained while engaging in meaningful public service work. Individuals selected under this program will be involved in a range of activities in support of the Bureau's legal work, such as assisting in investigatory work and litigation.
Duties
The following are the duties of this position at the CN-40, broadly equivalent to the GS-9. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
Provide assistance to attorneys by conducting legal research into the legislative history, legal decisions, opinions, rulings, memoranda, etc., surrounding Federal consumer financial law and related legal work, including consumer protection litigation, policy, and rule making
Summarize research findings and organize materials to highlight facts and points of significance to support attorney needs.
Assist attorneys in conducting interviews with investigative sources.
Draft correspondence, reports, routine legal documents, and other materials that require knowledge of legal instruments, process, and terminology
Qualifications
Eligibility: Applicants must apply within 2 years of completing an undergraduate (BA/BS) degree or more advanced degree. An exception to the two years of undergraduate degree completion will be granted to veterans who are precluded from applying within 2 years due to a military service obligation. Veterans who meet this exception will have up to six years from the date they completed their undergraduate degree to participate in the Honors Paralegal Program.
Qualifications for the 30 Grade level:Education: 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with an overall GPA of at least 3.0 (or equivalent); OR Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A.)
Specialized Experience for CN-40: To qualify at CN-40, you must have one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade/band (CN-30, GS-7 or equivalent) in the federal service. For this position specialized experience is defined as experience:
Performing research in an academic or professional setting; AND
Drafting reports, briefings, talking points and/or presentations to management or as part of an academic program.
OR
Education: Master's degree or equivalent or two years progressively higher education leading to such a degree, or an LL.B. or J.D. if related.
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. This is creditable providing the combination consists of 100% of the requirement. Only graduate level education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (27 quarter hours) may be combined to be considered for qualifying education.
The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/day/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week on your résumé.
Education
The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If you are qualifying based on foreign education, you must submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency. Refer to the
