This position is responsible for providing technical support to various radiation safety programs and is also responsible for leading day-to-day activities of radiation detection instrumentation quality assurance testing and checks.
Duties
Supports the NIST radiation safety program overseeing the implementation of requirements in general lab operations by performing laboratory surveys.
Maintains radiation counting laboratory equipment and general lab supplies/consumables.
Works with the health physics team to support operational activities of radioactive packages shipping and receiving and radioactive waste collection, storage, and packaging.
Performs routine data interpretation from radiation detection equipment to advise health physicists that are developing hazards mitigation plans or ionizing radiation use evaluations.

Qualifications
One year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-8 (ZT-II at NIST) level. Specialized experience is defined as:
Experience working in environments with radioactive materials or radiation producing machines.
Experience performing radiological surveys and checking conditions of radioactive sources or x-ray machines.
Experience using and calibrating radiation detectors.
-OR-Master's degree in a field of study that is directly related to the work of the position-OR-Two full years of graduate education (36 semester hours) in a field of study that is directly related to the work of the position
-OR-An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education beyond the first 1 1/2 years (27 semester hours) of progressive graduate study. Graduate education must be in a field of study that is directly related to the work of the position.
