Duties

Responsible for planning, formulating and directing the enforcement of all higher headquarters and installation range and training safety programs. Analyze proposed training which might be limited by or interfere with the presence or possible presence of unexploded ordinance. Evaluate training situations involving artillery, mortar, rocket, small arms and laser assisted devices for factors that limit, restrict and/or exceed range boundaries. Oversee training is conducted in a safe manner. Provide guidance regarding proper safety procedures. Monitor, enforce and respond to inquiries pertaining to scheduling and control of ranges and training areas. Provide training and technical assistance to supervisors, employees, environmentalists and soldiers.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • A current State or Federal OF346 driver's license is required; must be able to operate both a four-wheel drive vehicle with standard transmission and an off-road all-terrain vehicle. Work requires driving on hazardous roads and terrain.
  • Must be able to attend and successfully complete appropriate Range Operations Professional Development courses (ROPD) per TC25-8 / Chapter 4 and 5 guidelines within the first year of employment or as scheduling and funding allow.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical and subsequent physicals.
  • Work requires frequent exposure to foul weather conditions, working with or in close proximity to explosives or incendiary material in an environment where munitions and live fire training is being conducted.
  • Rotation between major training areas, shift work, rotating shifts and weekends/federal holiday work and overtime may be required.
  • May be required to travel for duty (TDY) up to 10% of the time.
  • This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. Person convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not eligible for the position.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
