The Appellate Section plays a crucial role in defending the integrity and constitutionality of DOJ's investigations and prosecutions. Appellate Section attorneys write briefs and argue cases in the courts of appeals; prepare draft briefs and certiorari petitions for the Solicitor General; make recommendations to the Solicitor General regarding whether further review of adverse decisions is warranted; and brief and argue motions in district courts in cases of national importance.
Duties
As a Paralegal Specialist, you may perform duties such as:
Proofread and cite-check legal briefs, memoranda, and other documents in Appellate Section matters.
Prepare electronic and hard-copy documents for filing in courts of appeals throughout the country.
Maintain detailed knowledge of court rules and policies to ensure compliance.
Conduct factual and legal research in Supreme Court cases and federal criminal appeals.
Administer the Appellate Section's library, including maintaining and organizing extensive collection of litigation reference sources.
Compile information and prepare reports concerning case status using Appellate Section's case management and recordkeeping software.
Assist in management of electronic and hard-copy case files.
Assist in management of requests for Appellate Section comment on legislative and policy proposals.
Exercise independent legal judgment in reviewing, classifying, and managing Appellate Section matters, subject to attorney supervision.

Qualifications
To qualify at the GS-12 Federal grade level, applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the GS-11 level: conducting factual and legal research utilizing legal and nonlegal databases; preparing and organizing information for production in court and for use on appeal; and utilizing computer applications and software for document collection and records management such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, CourtLink, PACER, Sharepoint databases, and Excel.
