Duties

This position serves as an Environmental Protection Specialist within the Assistant Director Service at the following location: William S. Middleton Veterans Hospital, 2500 Overlook Terrace, Madison, WI 53705 The environmental protection specialist is responsible for GEMS program planning and implementation to assure compliance with environmental laws and regulation. The environmental protection specialist completes permits and leads facility self-assessments, inspections, and other environmental investigations. Duties include but are not limited to: Administers the GEMS program and is responsible for management of GEMS activities and internal reporting activities Advises senior level management officials on the status of environmental programs Recommends changes in the design of facility work programs to meet new environmental requirements Interacts with federal, state, and local environmental agencies with respect to facility environmental issues Independently schedules and leads environmental audits to identify and evaluate program implementation and compliance activities Trains other employees and lower grade environmental staff, providing instruction on a variety of subjects related to specific and specialized environmental topics. Adapts various available media to fit special and unique training requirements and participates in the development of novel or innovative environmental training and promotion activities Work schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm Telework: Ad-Hoc Telework Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/09/2024. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Experience: Must possess 1full year of specialized experience at the GS-09 level that equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Environmental Protection Specialist position. To be credible, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience for this position would consist of: ?Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of program or administrative work relating to environmental protection program. Applies specialized knowledge of one or more program or functional areas of environmental protection work to include: ?(1) an understanding of environmental laws and regulations, (2) knowledge of how to plan, organize, implement, and evaluate of environmental programs, (3) practical knowledge of environmental sciences and related disciplines, and the relationship between environmental factors and human health and well-being; and (5) practical knowledge of important historic and natural resources and the relationship between the preservation and management of these resources and environmental protection. NOTE: Evidence of specialized experience must be supported by detailed documentation of duties performed in positions held. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work includes frequent audits of waste storage areas and involves a good deal of walking, standing, bending, and climbing.
