Duties

As a Microbiologist (Informatics), you will: Perform various techniques to rapidly identify and characterize microbiological agents that cause several diseases. Document and prepare analyses and reports of findings for tests and studies. Support evaluative and developing approaches for strengthening the standardization and utility of national health information systems by using informatics/information technology-based innovations with special emphasis on electronic data interchange. Respond to questions for inclusion in a comprehensive report on study findings.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level, which must include the following experience: utilizing laboratory techniques for molecular testing of clinical specimens, management of testing records and results in databases using informatics technologies databases (i.e., Electronic Health Records, Laboratory Information Management Systems, etc.) to manage test records and results. OR Have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. OR Combination of specialized experience and graduate level education that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

A copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.
