The CDC utilize Direct Hire Authority to fill vacancies in a variety of occupations. The vacancy is a REPOSITORY of applications. Applications may be periodically referred to hiring managers both during the open period and after the closing date. Economist (Data Scientist): Grades GS-7 through GS-15

Requirements

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications Degree: economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus; OR Combination of education & experience: courses equivalent to a major in economics, as above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to Basic Qualifications above, Minimum Qualifications must be met: GS-7: At least 1 year of graduate-level education OR Superior Academic Achievement (See Education section) OR 1 year of specialized experience (GS-5 equivalent) OR A combination of education & experience GS-9: At least 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree OR 1 year of specialized experience (GS-7 equivalent) OR A combination of education & experience GS-11: At least 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR 1 year of specialized experience (GS-9 equivalent) OR A combination of education & experience GS-12 & above: At least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level

Education

A copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.

A college or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to Department of Education Accreditation page.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. Superior Academic Achievement is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.
  1. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
  2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.) -- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
    • 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or
    • 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2years of the curriculum.
  3. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society -- Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies. Membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision.
