This is a term position with initial appointment expecting to last at least 13 months but may be extended up to four years, or more based on any changes to regulations governing the number of years term appointments may last, without further competition. Duties

CARPENTRY Incumbent assists with carpentry tasks in repairing and modifying wood components of historic structures. Selects proper tools to use; determines methods and techniques based on established practices and specific instructions. Assists with removing non-historic building additions or modifications. Accomplishes work in collaboration with other multidisciplinary preservation team members and assists in constructing support structures necessary for preservation treatment and matching historic fabric. Incumbent will use simple measuring devices such as tape measures and squares; and hand and power tools such as hammers, bars, handsaws, screw drivers, skill saws, jig saws, hand-belt sanders and drills. PAINTING Cleans and prepares buildings, walls, trim, and floor surfaces for painting by sanding, scraping, wire brushing or by the application of approved commercial paint removers. Incumbent will stir, mix and thin paint or other chemical preservatives and applies to work surface either by brush or roller according to specific instructions. Assists with treating wooden vigas, latillas, historic lintels and doorsills with linseed oil or other comparable preservative. MASONRY Assists in the maintenance, repair, and stabilization of historic ruins and sites built of stone and mortar. Incumbent mixes soils, water, and amendments for mortars as prescribed; removes damaged portions of walls or other architectural features in preparation for repair of damage stabilization and original fabric; lays stone and bricks; implements prescribed preservation treatments; and records the location, time, materials, and labor involved in the process. Applies appropriate chemical preservatives to masonry surfaces by either spraying or painting. Utilizes trade tools such as trowels, hammers, chisels, and crowbars. ROOFING Incumbent removes deteriorated roofing materials; assists with restoring and stabilizing roofs and/or replacing original materials in kind. As directed, applies new wood, asphalt, or other materials as appropriate to preserve the original fabric. Assists with repairing metal flashing, gutters, drip edges and other roofing accessories. Assists with repairing roof sheathing and, applies wood preservative to remaining historic fabric. Uses hand tools such as brooms, scrapers, ladders, square shovels, trowels, knives, and spreaders. MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATION (MVO) Operates vehicles over Federal, state, and country roads and city streets in all traffic conditions and performs minor operator maintenance on light duty motor vehicles such as pickup trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, carryalls, sedans, crew cab pickup trucks, which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of up to 4500 kilograms (10,000 pounds). Vehicles are driven over public roads (or the equivalent) at highway speeds to transport personnel, supplies, materials, or equipment and tools, or to tow equipment throughout rural or urban areas. SAN JUAN NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE AREA INFORMATION San Juan National Historic Site consists of a system of 400+ year Spanish fortifications and bastions that encircle the 500-year-old City of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico is the smallest island of the Greater Antilles chain. The island is 35 miles wide and 100 miles long with the highest elevation at 3000 feet. Average island temperature year-round is 82-87 degrees during the day and 72- 77 degrees at night. The San Juan metropolitan area has all amenities including excellent health services and retail stores. Recreational opportunities can be found island wide. San Juan airport is located 7 miles from the park and is serviced by most major airlines with nonstop flights to major hubs. Flight time to Miami is 2.5 hours and Atlanta is 3.5 hours. Cost of living is considered moderate. Puerto Rico has an 11.5% sales tax.
