You will serve as a TRANSPORTATION ASSISTANT (FREIGHT) in the SUPPLY MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT of NAVSUP FLT LOGISTICS CNTR JACKSONVILLE at Gulfport, MS. #LI-NAVSUPFLCJ

Duties

You will ship, store, label, and process HAZMAT shipments in accordance with applicable laws, policies, and regulations. You will use automated systems to initiate, update, research, verify, correct, and document standard, hazardous, oversized, classified, and urgent shipments. You will prepare cost comparisons to find the most cost effective shipping methods and carriers. You will maintain contact with carrier representatives and other agencies concerning shipment delays, shortages, overages, needed services, documentation, and equipment availability. You will be responsible for physically monitoring stored items to ensure safety from spills, leaks, and other hazards.

  • Generally, current federal employees applying for GS jobs must serve at least one year at the next lower grade level. This requirement is called time-in-grade. Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a valid forklift license/certification.
  • You will be required to lift and carry items up to 40 pounds.
  • You may be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes as needed.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Utilizing a technical knowledge of freight classification in order to classify hazardous freight, as well as the knowledge required to utilize all modes of transportation. I have resolved wide ranges of problems in connection with the shipment of government material and equipment. Examples of specialized experience may include: 1) Classifying materials into appropriate categories, and identifying the need for special packing, loading, or handling, and coordinating arrangements for these needs with other activity personnel as well as with carriers; 2) Preparing complete instructions for materials being shipped (shipment size, shape, weight, packaging requirements, etc.); 3) Determining the most cost effective mode of transportation; 4) Arranging for complete routings to handle shipments with urgent delivery dates, or shipments to isolated origin or destination points that cannot be transported through normal channels; and 5) Utilizing automated information systems to input a range of standard information or track shipments.
