Duties

You will serve as a Military Working Dog Handler and function as a Law Enforcement Officer performing law enforcement of federal and state criminal laws, protecting persons and property. You will perform advanced on/off leash obedience, controlled aggression, safely utilizes MWDs in congested areas. You will participate in planning of special enforcement activities requiring utilization of MWDs. You will maintain receipts, accountability, and provide security for various narcotic and explosive aids used for detector dog proficiency training on a daily basis. You will respond to emergency calls, complaints, and other calls for service during the watch. You will act promptly, decisively, and judiciously when observing a violation or investigating a complaint, crime, or accident. You will conduct investigative stops, questions, detains, and issues traffic citations as required.

  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You must meet the qualifications and be certified to carry a firearm. You will need to maintain firearm proficiency.
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. You will be required to sign a DD-Form-2760, Qualification to possess firearms or ammunition.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • You must have reached your 18 birthday prior to appointment.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This position is subject to shift work; subject to 24-hour recall and will maintain a 24-hour recall notification number and is required to respond, subject to being interrupted from meal or other work breaks while on duty. Overtime may be required.
  • May be required to respond to off base circumstances as directed by the installation commander, in accordance with USMC and DOD policy.
  • Incumbent must pass all weapons qualifications tests prior to assigned duties and responsibilities and must pass all re-qualifications as required.

Qualifications

GS- 07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Assisting in Military Working Dog demonstrations, handling searches of various locations, and performing obedience, controlled aggression, and leash work with Military Working Dogs. GS- 08: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Conducting demonstrations for Military Working Dog handling, ensuring the dog is trained for patrol, narcotics, explosives, and investigative tasks. Performing searches in various locations and demonstrating on/off leash obedience and controlled aggression, even in congested areas.
