As a Recreation Fee Technician at Acadia National Park, you will perform a variety of duties associated with the collection, deposit, and tracking of fee revenue and donations collected form the public under legal authorities such as the Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act. In many instances, you are the first and only contact the visiting public has with an National Park Service (NPS) employee, answering visitor questions and explaining the area's recreational opportunities.
Duties
Collect appropriate fees at a park entrance station, visitor center, campground, and/or other visitor contact station(s) in accordance with established accountability guidelines for handling government funds
Troubleshoot issues with fee program related technologies and equipment that include hardware, software, and peripheral devices
Use automated reservation systems to process routine, simple payments, transactions, and reservations for campgrounds, and tickets. Explain rules and regulations to reservation holders and disseminate park information
Utilize fee program related technologies and equipment such as hand-held devices, computers, POS equipment, tablets, mobile phones, scanning devices, and reservation systems in accordance with established guidelines
Prepare a variety of reports to record sales, verify financial transactions, and take stock
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. citizen or national.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- May be subject to a one-year probationary period.

- You will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program.
- The GS-5 position as a full performance level of GS-5. The GS-6 position has a full performance level of GS-6.
- You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
- A valid state driver's license is required.
Qualifications
In order to be qualified at the GS-5, you must possess one of the following:
A. One year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-4 level in the Federal service, collecting and safeguarding monies from fees or sales; using software programs to maintain financial/accounting data (e.g. fee collection/remittance or stock data); using equipment (e.g. cash registers, scanners, point-of-sale equipment) to make sales transactions; and preparing standardized reports on fees/monies collected during a shift - OR -
B. Four years post-high school education leading to a Bachelor's degree - OR -
C. A combination of specialized experience as described in A and undergraduate education as described in B that, when combined, equals 100% of the total requirement. (Please note: only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours may be used in this calculation.)
In order to be qualified at the GS-6, you must possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-5 level in the Federal service, collecting and safeguarding monies from fees or sales before preparing them for deposit; using software programs to maintain financial/accounting data (e.g. fee collection/remittance or stock data); troubleshooting problems with fee-collection equipment (e.g. cash registers, point-of-sale machines, scanning devices); and reviewing fee-related shift records to ensure completeness and accuracy.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
