Duties
The Chief Historian is the CMH's and the Army Historical Program's senior professional historian, responsible for the professional, development and mentorship of more than 500 uniformed and civilian personnel carrying out historical programs across the Army Enterprise. The incumbent is responsible for developing and maintaining professional development programs as part of the Education and Information Sciences Career Field, Functional Community 61.
The incumbent is also responsible for exercising the Center's Published Products Standard Operating Procedure, a business charter and plan that integrates research, writing, editing, layout, production, and distribution of multimedia historical products across the Army Enterprise. The incumbent manages and executes the Department of the Army Historical Advisory Subcommittee, a FACA designated committee subordinate to the Army Education Committee, reporting to the ASA(M&RA).
The incumbent coordinates execution of a $81M annual enterprise budget composed of contracts, CIV PAY, and travel in execution of Army-wide historical programs. Incumbent works closely with Army Contracting Command and ACCMA on contracts and fellowships for civilian manpower. Direct interaction with a CMH workforce of 256 Army Civilians at 28 locations in three countries, and an additional 250 non-CMH civilian and military historians across the Army.
Provides functional supervision of two GS-14 Master Authors, responsible for mentorship, editorial support, and Editorial Review Board functions. Maintains professional relationships with the historical community through the Society for Military History, American Historical Association, Organization of American Historians, and the International Commission for Military History.
Qualifications
Applicants must submit written statements (narrative format) that address the following Technical Qualification(s). TECHNICAL QUALIFICATION(S) (TQ): (MANDATORY SUBMISSION):
A narrative statement specifically addressing each mandatory technical qualification. TQs must provide specific examples that address relevant experience and accomplishments. Total TQ write-up should not exceed 4 pages total. TQ using 12 pt, Arial or Times New Roman with 1 inch margins. Applicants must reflect superior technical qualifications demonstrated through leadership and management in the following:
TQ1: I possess the demonstrated senior-level leadership experience relevant to historical research and writing, and how these
programs interrelate with Army issues to assist senior leaders in making strategy, policy, and program decisions. The ability to coach historians, archivists, and museum professionals to develop historical products that provide actionable support for senior leader decisions. The ability to lead studies and determine appropriate analysis techniques and processes and communicate results and recommendations to senior leaders. The ability to coach and mentor historians in writing grammatically correct and engaging prose that effectively narrates and communicates aspects of the Army's institutional or operational history.
Education
POSITIVE EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
You must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution authorized to grant baccalaureate degrees or have been certified by the appropriate agency official as possessing significant potential for advancement to levels of greater responsibility and authority based on demonstrated analytical and decision-making capabilities, job performance and qualifying experience; education as described immediately below.

Basic Requirements:
1. Degree: history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.
or
2. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
