Duties

The employee will serve as an Information Technology Specialist (OS/SYSADMIN) in the Bureau of Consumer Protection's Tech Lab (Lab), which operates a separate network that provides undercover Internet access to FTC staff to conduct investigations and research. The employee will perform the following duties: Working on a small, cross-functional team to perform storage, network, security, customer service, and other information technology (IT) functions. Providing IT support for all the Lab's daily operations to include: operation, administration, and maintenance of network and server systems; setup, installation, and testing of IT hardware and software; monitoring and maintaining remote access points; data security review; database management and optimization; data storage maintenance, data backup, and recovery; configuring, installing, and maintaining VMware/VSphere systems; and updating mobile device operating systems and applications. Researching new software and hardware to determine its application to the Tech Lab and its customers. Providing daily assistance to legal staff on conducting technology-related investigations, including gathering requirements about investigations and assisting staff in identifying and using the software and other tools available in the Lab to identify targets and capture evidence. Providing specialized training for attorneys, investigators, and paralegals on mission- specific computer software programs, databases, and other technology. Developing technical designs, identifying system requirements, establishing testing, implementation, and post-implementation support procedures, and developing user instructions. Reviewing and monitoring new and emerging technologies to make recommendations about improvements to the Lab. Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To qualify for an Information Technology Specialist (OS/SYSADMIN) at the GS-12 & GS-13 levels, individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below. The employing agency is responsible for identifying the specific level of proficiency required for each competency at each grade level based on the requirements of the position being filled. Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. To qualify for an Information Technology Specialist (OS/SYSADMIN) position at the GS-12 level, you must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: handling short and long-range IT project; maintaining computer networks, desktops, and VMware/VSphere systems; diagnosing and resolving system problems; providing hands on IT customer service. To qualify for an Information Technology Specialist (OS/SYSADMIN) at the GS-13 level, you must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: performing a broad range of IT duties such as networking and system administration; configuring, installing, repairing, and maintaining computer networks, desktops, and VMware/VSphere systems; diagnosing and resolving system problems by analyzing a variety of conditions, problems and issues regarding hardware, software, and networks; providing hands on IT customer service as part of your daily work. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no education requirement for this position or substitution of education for specialized experience at this grade level.
