Job opening: AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

Salary: $29 - 34 per hour

You will serve as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic in the Production Division, Public Works Department Great Lakes, of Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic.

Duties

You will replace major portions of cooling units such as compressors, condensers, expansion valves, floats and service files, thermostats, coils, and drive assemblies. You will interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications. You will test small units and systems using compound refrigeration gauges and ammeters to locate worn and broken parts. You will use all trade tools and test equipment and instruments to include voltage, amperage, electronic refrigerant leak detectors, capacitor analyzers, etc.

  • Must possess or obtain upon employment, EPA 608 certification exam at the following levels: ‘Core certification’ PLUS one or more of ‘Type 1 (Small Appliances)’,’Type 2 (High Pressure)’ and/or ‘Type 3 (Low Pressure)’ certification.
  • Must be able to become CPR certified.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This position may require rotating shift work.

Qualifications

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This position has a selective placement factor that will be used to screen out ineligible candidates. The selective placement factor is: Must have a current and valid Universal Refrigerant Certification. Note: Certifications must be documented in your resume and attached to your application package to be considered for the position. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Repairing and maintaining a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and heating, ventilation and air conditioning units and systems; 2) Testing small units and systems using compound refrigeration gauges and ammeters to locate worn and broken parts; 3) Selecting and obtaining appropriate materials and replacement parts; 4) Inspecting and observing equipment for proper operation, oil levels, cycling, overheated bearings, and unusual noises. Physical Demands: The mechanic normally works from the floor or from ladders to reach equipment, and occasionally from scaffolding and platforms. Work requires considerable standing, climbing, stooping, bending, stretching and working in cramped, awkward positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up items weighing up to 40 pounds...50 pounds with assistance. Working Conditions: Most of the work is performed inside, but frequently subject to sudden temperature changes when working on equipment. Work is also frequently performed outside, sometimes in bad weather. Work areas are frequently dusty, moldy, noisy, dirty and greasy; variable temperatures occur when working in cold-storage rooms; subject to possible injuries such as cuts, bruises, burns, and electrical shock; possible respiratory disorders due to inhalation of refrigerant gases. Hearing protective devices and other protective devices and safety equipment must be worn at all times of exposure to the hazardous condition. Working conditions are considered in the evaluation of the job and do not meet criteria for compensation by environmental or hazard pay. Call back and emergency overtime are regular requirements of this position. The incumbent may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
