Operates a variety of complex Radiologic equipment both mobile and fixed, will perform a variety of routine and very difficult radiographic examinations, analyzes, and sets proper technical factors, positions patient and making the exposures necessary for the requested procedure. Assists the radiologist in a variety of difficult and sometimes sterile fluoroscopic procedures. Perform a full and complete range of CT exams of the head, chest, abdomen, pelvis, and extremities.

Duties

Technologist will cover General x-ray with all routine duties and responsibilities. Responsible to perform a full range of CT exams. This will consist of both contrast and non contrast exams. Tech will keep a separate log of all CT patients done during this shift. Technologist will coordinate their request for leave with General Radiology back up CT trained technologist. Performs a variety of difficult and routine radiographic examinations for the diagnosis of illness or injuries in accident victims. Receives patients, explains procedures, positions patients, selects technical factors, and makes exposures. Review and process images for quality and send through to be read. In addition, as needed, Sets up and operates accessory equipment required for special examinations. Performs highly technical CT and Diagnostic procedures such as tomography, cholangiography, or pyelograms. Is responsible for suite set-up. Monitors patient's condition and vital signs when necessary and notifies the radiologist of any significant changes. Confers with radiologists to determine requirement of non-standard exams. Determines technical factors, positioning, number, and thickness of scans, etc., to produce and satisfy requirements of CT scanning. Prepares contrast materials used in diagnostic/CT imaging exams performed in the general radiology and CT department. Continuously on the alert to the patient's condition and other disorders. Reactions on the part of the patient require immediate attention so that harm does not come to the patient or equipment. Performs radiographic examinations at the patient's bedside utilizing all means available to limit the x-ray beam to the immediate area being examined. As a team member in the operating room, works with the surgical staff to obtain the view and images needed for hardware placement or removal, positioning of fractures, removing stones and location missing surgical items. Explain the exams to patients or family member so that the patient understands what is to be done as well as what hazards, if any, is possible. Properly identifies patients' images using flash identifier, left and right markers. This is essential so that mistaken identity of patient films does not occur. Radiographer must be certain the patient ID band and the request are identical. Register patients into the computerized Radiology Information System. Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients. Practices radiation safety to reduce exposure to patient, staff, and self. This is achieved using lead aprons, lead gloves, lead shields, lead-lined walls, and collimation. Technologist will comply to radiation regulations and wear film badges. Be aware of and practice the safety policies/procedures of the medical center. Responsible for cleanliness of exam room and equipment, stocking adequate levels of supplies in assigned areas. Report equipment malfunction in a timely manner to the supervisor. Technologist captures computerized radiographs, applies an algorithm, configures the image and verifies patient information before transmitting them to the picture archive system. Procedure requires the technologist to have a general knowledge of computer operations. Image manipulation and transmission is critical in computerized radiography, lost data can only be recaptured by repeating the radiograph. Capable of performing routine and complex CT examinations, as well as a basic understanding of human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and medical terminology. Perform peripheral, visceral, and cerebral angiography using bolus tracking, cardiac gating (prospective and retrospective techniques.) Remain current with knowledge of imaging technology, procedures, local policies, VA Directives, TJC Compliance and pertinent guidelines. .Provide coordination of care with clinics and departments such as ICU, Anesthesia, Interventional Radiology, Cardiology, Nuclear medicine, and Emergency Department. Maintains a thorough knowledge of the ordering process in the EMR, reviews the screening and contrast assessment forms in CT for accuracy, employs the use of Pregnancy Screening Forms and Consent forms as required by policy, and researches all questionable information prior to initiating the exam. Autonomous regulation and completion of all Talent management System (TMS) training, Biennial Continuing Education requirements, Continuing Qualification Requirements (ARRT, CQR), American Heart Association Resuscitation Quality Improvement (RQI) standards. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent [can operate independently] and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. [In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). DRT assignments that include performance of independent duties in this subspecialty require advanced ARRT certification. Computed Tomography (CT):This specialty modality requires specific knowledge of cross sectional human anatomy and its application in spiral, and/or, multi-slice computer tomography, inclusive of 3-D reconstruction scans, including drainages, biopsies, and peripheral vascular examinations. The technologist requires specific knowledge and training in the location, appearance, and function of the various major and minor systems susceptible to radiological illumination; to interpret the examination request accurately; to understand the functioning and interrelationship of the various organs; to use the methods and techniques which will identify organs appearing on the digital display monitor, or on film, and the various stages of the examination to judge the acceptability of the image and/or scan for diagnostic use and to emphasize the aspects of interest to the physician. DRT assignments that include performance of independent duties in this subspecialty require advanced ARRT certification. Grade Determinations: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist, GS-9 Experience.: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. DRTs at this grade level may be appointed to one of the following assignments: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist: Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. DRTs at this level may have varying assignments including special and complex imaging procedures beyond the full performance level, clinical instruction, and basic QM type duties within the program. Regardless of the nature of the specific assignment, the work must be of sufficient scope and complexity to meet the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform at this level. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*). *Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures. Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers. *Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure. Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions. Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
