These positions are located in various locations within the Montana/Dakotas BLM. Information about each location and the surrounding area can be found by searching the chamber of commerce web site for each city. We expect to fill one or more vacancies in each location at this time; however, if needed, other locations within the Montana/Dakotas State, District or Field offices may be considered based on need and management discretion.

Duties

Under the direction of a higher level technician or specialist, performs routine and recurring weed management activities in accordance with all applicable plans, agreements, and regulations. Under the direction of a higher level technician or specialist, works with cooperators to complete weed projects with user groups, recreationists, volunteers, etc. Operates, maintains, and inventories weed management equipment (tools, monitoring/mapping equipment, pesticide applicators, etc.). Under the direction of a higher level technician or specialist, safely mixes, maintains, and calibrates herbicides and pesticides for use in rangeland environments.

Requirements

Qualifications

In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. GS-04: You must possess six months of general and six months of specialized experience. General experience is any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position or provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience must be at or equivalent to the GS-03 and equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: conducting weed treatments under the supervision of another licensed pesticide applicator; assisting with inventory and monitoring of weed infestations; maintaining spraying equipment; assisting with the proper application, storage, and handling of pesticides. -OR- Education: You must have completed two years of study above high school that included 12 semester hours in courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than three semester hours in mathematics is creditable. -OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. GS-05: You must possess one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: conducting weed treatments under the supervision of another licensed pesticide applicator; assisting with inventory and the monitoring of weed infestations; maintaining spraying equipment; assuming responsibility for complying with proper application, storage, and handling of pesticides. -OR- Education: You must have completed a full four-year course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a field directly-related to this position; or that included at least 24 semester hours in courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. Only six semester hours in mathematics is creditable. - OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. GS-06: You must possess one full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: conducting weed treatments with limited supervision of another licensed pesticide applicator; conducting inventory and the monitoring of weed infestations; maintaining spraying equipment; assuming responsibility for complying with proper application, storage, and handling of pesticides. -OR- Education: You must have completed a full one-year graduate education in a field directly related to the work of the position. or that included at least 18 semester hours in courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. Only six semester hours in mathematics is creditable. - OR- Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work requires some physical exertion, such as regular and recurring running, walking, or bending; walking or climbing over rocky areas, through dense vegetation, and in mountainous terrain. The incumbent must be in good physical condition, be able to lift heavy objects, and perform strenuous physical activity for prolonged periods of time. The incumbent may be required to carry up to 45 pounds on his/her back over uneven terrain. Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The incumbent will carefully adhere to all safety policies and procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.

Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
