Duties

You will perform inside and outside plant work of the division, which is tasked with accomplishing construction, installation, maintenance, and repair services of fiber optics and copper communications infrastructure. You will determine vehicles, tools, materials requirements, and work methods to be used to complete assigned work. You will troubleshoot, test splices for shorts, opens, transposed/reversed pairs, crosses, splits, shield continuity, shield to earth grounds, bonding and grounding, on copper cables. You will maintain accountability of all items, vehicles, tools, and test equipment assigned to the section. You will provide technical support for planned projects consisting of switching and transport networks supporting analog, digital, voice, data, and video teleconference services.

Requirements

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position is designated as a Cyber IT/Cybersecurity Workforce position. You must obtain and maintain the credentials as described in SECNAV M-5239.2 for specialty area 441-Network Operations Specialist within 6 months of appointment.

Qualifications

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION: Analyzing and understanding safety and health administration (OSHA) policies and procedures as they relate to the telecommunications infrastructure repair, maintenance and installation environments. Reading building blueprints, telephony infrastructure drawings and diagrams. Using tools such as electrical and manual drills, torque wrenches, screwdrivers, long-nosed pliers, fiber optic glass cleavers, and other specialized tools of the trade. Operating atmospheric testing equipment utilized in confined space work and recording readings as appropriate.
